    Over-optimization. Check your anchor text.

I'm seeing this problem a lot with my websites lately. It started somewhere between 8-12 of January and I haven't really figured it out yet. Anyone else seeing this same thing?

At least for me it's not about over-optimization. This time it's something else.

This depends on so many variables...
    Your question is too broad.
    Check your competition.
    Check yourself.
    Check your content.
    Etc etc

If your website is not over-optimized for that particular main keyword and is still not ranking, then it means that there is a lot of competition for that keyword. Check which sites are ranking at the top - check their stats and back links in majestic seo and ahrefs. If the sites at the top are high authority sites like wikipedia or youtube, it would be much harder to displace them.

If you can share your keyword (and long tail keywords), without revealing your website maybe we can give you better idea of what to look at.

It's not about competition being too tough, anyway should be ranking somewhere. It's not new niche for me so I know the competition quite well. Axemantech, if you think about it, checking competition links doesn't solve anything. This is more about some filter/penalty (might have been over optimization like you said) what I'm experiencing. I'm not comfortable outing my keywords, so I understand that answering with only this information is not easy.

Basically rankings don't make any sense at the moment for some keywords. Guess just have to wait few weeks and see if everything comes back to normal.

At least your picking up traffic from long tail keywords, which is better than most :)

what is your kw anchor density for your backlinks?
