Work on keywords with more than a 1000 monthly searches. Unless it's really a good targetted keyword I like 10,000 or more per month.

yeah 1000 global searches isn't really that many. 9th position puts you down at the bottom of the page, below the fold so to speak. The bulk of those searchers probably aren't even scrolling down, they just click one of the top 5 they see on the screen. Even if they do scroll down, is your title and description good enough to get people to click your ad over the others?

I'd suggest, working on getting a little higher position, make sure the title and description will make people want to check out your site over the others, and more importantly work on getting a good position with some other keywords with a higher monthly search volume.

    Good luck, Wolf

1000 Global monthly searches is not so good, Look for Local Monthly Searches.. Pick keywords that have amount of search more than 5000, then your site will get the number of clicks / visitors are quite a lot..

As was said, 9th position will not get you much traffic for any keyword, even one that has tens of thousands of searches a month. If you were ranking 9th for a keyword like "lose weight", chances are you might see a somewhat steady flow of traffic if your title and description were attractive, but for a keyword with only 1000 searches, you won't see much at all. You should be able to beat out the competitors for a keyword that only gets 1000 searches a month.

Edit: C0ck Zilla also makes a good point, this could be a dead keyword/dead niche. A keyword like "best toasters of 2008" isn't going to get many searches in 2010, but it may still show up as getting a fair amount of searches in the Adwords Keyword Tool.

I always wonder why people get attached to a keyword. Time to move on with this one.

It's not worth worrying about the 9th position for 1000 monthly broad searches. Its a CRAP keyword unless you are in the top 2-3. After that the traffic isn't there to justify any additional time/money/resouces. You may a get a click a day. But @ a 1.5% conversion rate you are looking at 5-6 months before you makes sale.

Look for keywords getting 6k+ broad searches a month try to build upon that. You'll need a least 3-5. A single keyword will not do it for you on big G.

Get market samurai ( available on BHW)
learn to use it and prosper

Here are my general settings for MS:
    SEOT: 100
    PBR: 10-20
SEOC: 100K ( depends on market can be as high as 500K. You may want to start at 20K-50K if you are a noob)
SEOTC; 100k ( I usually don't set this but it's good to get a feel for the domain competition.)

You can't expect any clicks if you're below the fold with a keyword that only gets 1000 searches. Unless this keyword is a very good "buying" keyword, i would move on and find some keywords with a higher search volume and try to get a top 3 position in google.

As everyone here has said already 1000 monthly searches is not a lot. You would need to be at number 1 to just get maybe 20 hits a day, it's pretty worthless. You need to find something better. On the up side if you researched enough to pick this niche with your education then you ARE on the right track in terms of keyword research. It was a good find, just not a great one. Keep up the good work and you will see results soon! :)

Is that 1000 searches broad of exact? For exact, I am surprised that you are not getting any traffic. Lets do the math here.
1000 exact searches per month should mean 30-40 exact searches per day. Even if you get 1% of that traffic you should be getting one visitor every other day on average.

Improve the title of the page, add an author profile. These will help in increasing the CTR.

Even if you are on number 1 you can't enjoy 50% of the traffic.

Assuming the 1000 search is divided across the 10 sites on page 1 then each of the sites will be receiving 100 global search monthly.

Now, divide 100 by 30days and you will get less than 4 visitors a day.

Theoretically, 65% of the search is divided among the number 1 to 3 sites.

Even if you are to get the entire 1000 traffic it will be about 33 visitors a day which isn't sufficient.

You have picked the wrong niche or keyword.

Restart your system and begin all over...

The 9th position generally will get you around 1% of total traffic. Simple math gives you 10 visitors total per month for this term. Thinking in terms of this not being a lot of volume is wrong. Look at it this way. Would you rather be ranked #1 for a term that get's 30K searches per month, or 30K keywords that get 100 searches per day. Too many people are concentrating on the wrong things when it comes to SEO.

Not surprised, a lot of my mini sites have local comp of 3500 - 5000 and if they do not rank in the top 4, they barely get any traffic. Also from my experience, you are better off at the top of page 2 than the bottom of 1.

I agree with everything said above but you should also think about brushing up on your seo skills if you can't rank at the top of a 1000 monthly searched for kw. Because if you take the same practices that you used for this kw and apply the same approach to the new kw, you're going to be even more disappointed assuming your new kw has more exact searches and therefore more competition. Before you go any further and start looking for new kw's, get this term to the top of the page to make sure you even have a shot at getting your new kw to the top 3.

And that's pretty obvious. Only sites that are in top 3 will get some sort of traffic under this volume

OP are you just concentrating on one keyword? Cause, then you're doing SEO completely wrong...
