My sister in law asked me 'how to make money online' and this is what I've said...

She is a writer with no experience in internet marketing. She has a regular job but wants to start something of her own.

She asked me how she could make money herself instead of doing a job.

As a human, my brain started to think of all the obvious answers like:

- make a blog
- attract leads
- get views
- dominate SERPs etc.

But then I realized that these tips mean nothing to a person who knows nothing about these MMO concepts.

I will end up confusing her more, and she might give up, like most people.

So what's the best reply in layman's terms? This is what I told her:

"get an audience somehow"

This is what I figured out to put it in the easiest way, without scaring her.

Then I explained to her all the possible ways.

If she follows this formula, no matter what path she chooses, she will make money somehow.

- If she decides to be a professional of some kind, like a coder: she will require an audience as clients
- If she wants to be an internet marketer: she will require the most potential views for most conversions

This might sound dumb if you're experienced, but for 100% newbies, our concepts of making money online could get a little overwhelming for them.

So, if you're a newbie with no knowledge about the online world and want to make money online, just get an audience.

Because, after all, there will be a person on the other end who will pay you or will help you get paid, but this is something most newbies do not understand.

So, what do they start doing? Copy others' work and spam instead of adding value somehow.

Even scammers need an audience to scam.

To be honest, I don't know an easier way to explain how to make money online.

That's a very open-minded answer to be honest. it produces a number of productive questions afterward.

How do I make money online? - Get an audience.
How do I get an audience? - Rank on SERPs, start a blog, youtube, etc.
How do I monetize? what skills I will have to build? etc.

Never say you make money online to the average person it sounds like a scam in their linear thinking minds.Say that you do marketing services for overseas clients.
I keep my online earning a secret I don't like people begging me for money for their money problems.

That is nice answer. The concept of finding audience is easy to understand, since people also need to do it on any job or business. The only diff is looking for audiance online or offline

@Bloodseeker can she twerk? j/k. Maybe ask her to explore and see what she is interested in. I am a firm believer in following a path in life that is based on interest. Making money isn't a misery then. Just my .02

She could use her writing skills and open a SL in the forum to provide a service which is in high demand.

If she's not shy and likes to talk a lot tell her to turn on camera and upload to youtube everyday. Seriously people just eat on YouTube and make money. You may have to help her get monetized but after that it's pretty much smooth sailng

I mean, "just get audience" is kind of an open recommendation. If you have audience you can do anything. Pin an advertisement on your popular twitter account and that already generates you value, forget the blog sell the audience.

She is a writer and already writing for a digital marketing firm, so the concept of making money online is not alien to her. She just doesn't know how to do it.

Also, she didn't ask me just because she wanted to know how I make money.

She asked me so that she could make money herself. So dodging the question with a generic answer would be inappropriate. :)

I tried to break down SEO to my sister that was asking me about internet marketing and to my surprise she kinda got it even though she is a complete newbie
Same with my wife. She gets individual concepts, but merging them all and painting a bigger picture is difficult for her sometimes. That's why I use the same reference of getting more audience to her and she starts linking stuff up.

That's where the concepts of IM apply. People learn the concepts, but do not know the purpose. So I always explain the purpose to a complete newbie so that they can make efforts in the right direction.

Hope she is now clear and starts here online journey.
I hope the same :)

@Bloodseeker can she twerk?
I want to know the same my man :D

Yes, that's the plan. Once she knows the basic concept of making money, she can explore her own path and she's actually working on that.

She could use her writing skills and open a SL in the forum to provide a service which is in high demand.
Doesn't SL mean shitlist? :anyway:

She is lazy as fuck. Recording video is not enough. Then editing, rendering, uploading, optimization, and other tasks would be too much for her.

That's true. Even in all the examples I gave about myself, I clearly mentioned I make money because I have an audience. That's how it works.

not trying to be funny, but pretty good explanation, even for getting involved in onlyfans
Get involved in anything online my man, you'll need an audience :D

Now you can shoot short videos on YouTube, people like to look at people, let them tell something about cosmetics or books. anything she's interested in

To be honest, I don't know an easier way to explain how to make money online.

And it is finally only this. Get an audience that you understand well...

It's not for nothing that businesses should first do a persona.

If you target everyone, you target no one...

Having an audience and understanding their fears, struggles, doubts, motivation, why they would open their wallet is the key to success.

Couldn't agree more.

In fact, I didn't have much success for years after I started, even though I had learned a lot of stuff about SEO, content marketing, and WordPress by then.

Later I figured out a simple thing. I was targeting everyone and everything.

It took me a while to cut the dead branches that I thought would sprout someday.

It's why I recommend to everyone to do a customer avatar in the first place, even if you adjust it later, it's crucial. :)

In marketing departments, we always do that :)

We also make a shit ton of surveys... because I realise the thing which is never done and should be is just freaking ASK people what they want, what they would like.

We forget often that behind people reading things and buying things are people with desires and the winner is always the one which replies to this desire efficiently.

A last quote for the day that I wrote to see in my room every day :
"You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want." Zig Ziglar

Well it should not be so complicated ,the important think to make money its to have knowledge or a big passion for a niche with affiliate products : some goon niches are welth ,health ,relationship etc .
Or it can go to clickbank and watch for some products and maybe it can figure out a niche
After he doing that ,if he has a passion for writing then he can start writing articles related in that niche and in her post can recommend the clickbank offer .
Then the adventure dont stop here ,he can also create youtube videos and put affiliate link in description
Create content on social media like fb groups ,pinterest ,tiktok ,yt shorts ,fb and instagram reels
