I live in a small town that has little money to spend on SEO... most of these people barely have teeth. Is it better to have my website rank #1 in my little hometown for "SEO my city name" or should I try and get some rank for the big city next to me?

The reason i ask is because i will be selling this over the phone and will be able to show the prospect some results of other customers but if they look at my own site I dont know if it would be better to rank #1 for my home town or not. I know it will be extremely difficult to get on the front page of "SEO Big City" but if I ever do get there I could probably get a lot of business off the web. I suppose if I call some guy in Tookus, WY he would be very impressed I am number on in my own city because he doesn't know how small it is... Thoughts anyone?

You mention that "you live in a small town with little/no money for SEO"

I think that is your answer right there. You want money, but they don't have any, so why try and sell them services.

As a new business, it is important to start small and expand, but there is no point starting in a market that is so small you will never get any clients.

I think you will be surprised how easy it can be to rank for small/medium size cities, although SEO based keywords will be harder.

Put yourself in the shoes of your potential customers. Would you want someone working on your website (which you have probably invested good money in) if they come from some hick-town or the local, modern metropolis. I know I'd choose the modern town. No-one can afford to take risks with their business these day.

many thanks, you both make good sense. It is a hick town for sure. I guess I'll get a PO box.

While a PO Box is a good way to start, if you are going for premium clients, you can buy a "virtual office" in your city.

They give you an address like.

    Suite 305
    Level 20
    15 Road Street
    Townsvilleberg

And while they own the entire level 20, there is no real suite 305, but when stuff is mailed there, they forward it to you.

They do cost quite a bit, but can help in projecting a professional image, especially if you are running a SEO shop in your basement in a hick town! :p

I would say try and rank for both. If you are number 1 for your small town, that is at least some credibility. If you rank for the larger one, that is a lot more.
