My Results So Far In Trying to Buy Links In Dmoz

Thought I'd share. For over a year now in various channels (forums, freelance, services) I have been offering $1000 for each of my 15 legitimate websites to get a listing in their most appropriate legitimate category. So $15K in total.

    To date. no takers.

I have been reluctant to contact editors directly for fear of getting blacklisted for the attempt. But after 7 years of trying it is about the only option left.

Maybe they aren't corrupt after all... just profoundly ineffective at staying current. I'm have way temped to diff the data nightly to show the world what kinds of sites are getting included and in what categories. I bet there is value in that data if you want to make a sight that gets listed and you don't care what the site is about. I wonder if people are tracking the domain expirations of the whole data set? Do people out there know todays expiring dmoz domains?

What do you think is going on over there?

You are mistaken if you don't think a properly keyword tuned dmoz link mean big bucks in SEO revenues for certain niches. I am more inclined to think that it is being controlled by organized crime. If I was a modern day gangster I'd sure as shit lean on certain dmoz category editors. Good thing for them I'm only a data junky.

dmoz's frequency in successful seo is easy to measure statistically in the SERPs. The only thing you can argue is that it may be a case of correlation versus causation, but only someone who hasn't looked into it would say otherwise.

And... FYI... If I have $15K to drop on dmoz links... I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing because it appears to be working great! ;)

i don,t think dmoz is important.

    the main is quality backlink.

you can see many site on google top on very high value keyword without dmoz listing.

i am not doing any dmoz or directory submission for my site. For me that is waste of time.

How can you guys say dmoz is not important? It really depends on the niche your in. There are plenty of keywords out there in which you can rank for without dmoz or yahoo directory. However, there are plenty of keywords out there in which the top 10 all have dmoz and yahoo directory. If you want to compete you have to pony up and get these links.

I agree with the waste of time completely. I also agree that you can succeed in places without one. I disagree with the idea (that you didn't make but could be implied) that there is no handicap in not having one.

I am inclined to agree with you that dmoz may not be important, but only because it doesn't appear to be actionable. If there is nothing someone can do to be listed then it isn't important in terms of what people should do.

I also disagree that dmoz is a banklink. dmoz is easily hundreds for syndicated backlinks from directories all over the world including from google.com itself. Google prefers to use the dmoz text over the title and meta text of the page which is why the flag noodp is usable in meta robots tags: http://yoast.com/articles/robots-meta-tags/

I hate dmoz too... I think they are lazy suck alls, but their little kingdom has value... We end up competing at a disadvantage in the SERPs because google sees value in their data. As long as that relationship exists everyone on the outside has to account for it. I guess that people just assume that by default these days.

Bingo! ;) And it's more common than most people think. And dmoz is like 10 times more influencial in the serps than yahoo even though yahoo has fresher data than dmoz. Its almost as if you need to code your webpage in 1990 design standards or have a website that hasn't changed much in 20 years to be included.

Except that unlike other links it is syndicated to hundreds of other website including Google.com in a do!!follow capacity and it is hard coded into googles search engine behaviors in a way that no other links are... see my previous posts above if you missed that.

Hey if you think it works go for it. In my opinion dmoz was a nice backlink to have back in the days when you had to send a email to a webmaster for one.

Can't you replace these links with some other links? Ok some website has 10.000 links + dmoz +yahoo
Your website has 10.000 no dmoz no yahoo. Why not get some other links (hundreds, thousands) instead that will outweight those dmoz+yahoo ?
You don't have to get exact backlinks to compete. You can get same link value from different sources.

Just by getting inside Dmoz or yahoo doesn't guarantee ranking in search engines but it's also true they carry good weight with them.

    Dmoz - PR 8, Alexa 460
    Yahoo Dir - Pr 8, Alexa - 4

What more you want from backlinks... Sites are not only authority but also attracts tons of visitors. You not only get powerfull back link but also get visitors...

About money, $1k for dmoz listing... It all depends upon needs... If my site is doing good and making good money and I am on first page and trying to boost ranking. With 1-2 position up I might start making several hundred bucks extra then why not I will pay $1k, I might even pay more.

If site is no where then just by getting inside Dmoz nothing gonna change or very little value then even $100 will be big amount for it.

All is game of ROI... Do you need little extra nudge and if yes then how desperate you are...

Paying $1k for a link in DMOZ is absolutely crazy. Instead of wasting your time trying to get into that very-corrupt directory, you could have been building links elsewhere.

For $1k, you could buy backlinks from other websites that will actually benefit you more than DMOZ will. As others have said, DMOZ was good back in the day.

Being listed in DMOZ will still help you, of course, which is why you should just submit to it and leave it. It's not the deciding factor on whether you're going to rank well or not though. I rank on the first page for a keyword with 37 million results (or just over 2 million exact competitors). I'm not listed in DMOZ and I'm ranking above a lot of websites who ARE listed.

LOL Dmoz is a joke I got 2 adult sites included! and can't get any of my legit sites included! ipopbb you might want to try and become an editor yourself. A friend of mine edited 2 different categories with 2 different persona's. He no longer edits as he is no longer with us. by the way my adult sites were not included via my friend. He was not in the adult categories.

I see DMOZ as like having a T-REX in your SEO Dinosaur army.

It has the power to bring the pain in the SERP, and show big results quickly, however it can be overcome by 50000 velociraptors.

I find it curious how an ageing directory with mediocre content and management is valued so highly by search providers.

It's not that dmoz and yahoo dir will automatically make your site rank to the top of the serps it's the fact that they have an unfair rank weight to them and they make G trust your site more. If you have to pay $1,000 to make G trust your site more and aid you in cracking the top spots in the serps then it's probably worth it.

Now if you need those links to crack the top spots in the serps for keywords that won't yield you a decent roi then you need to go back to square 1 and teach yourself some proper SEO because you don't know what your doing.

These links will help you - but their more for competitive terms - not longtails.
