Ok so after a lot of work, I had around 10 keywords ranking well, including a couple of high volume searches. Then Penguin 4.0 comes along and all my keywords except two disappear out of the top 300 results. Fine i guess its an update and my attempts at link building are best described as amateur so i probably deserved it but then they started to re-appear then disappear again. After a week it settled down and my keywords stayed gone, i accepted my failure and moved on, then this morning out of no where they were all back and not just back in the results but back to where they ranking before the update, I was over joyed, 4 hours later they were gone again. I can't take it anymore Does any one out there have any ideas why google is so indecisive.

Google Dances like crazy. This Penguin and most probably other algorithms are making stormy weather. One day you are in, the other out, nobody knows if you will survive the storm.

If we ranked new keyword bacause of google dance that would be nice. but sadly not in the case

May be to control your emotions why not emotionally blackmail Google.

This is all part of SEO, and you'll get used to it in time. I started SEO at 16, so I likely wasn't as emotionally developed, and I remember what you're talking about. For me, it can sometimes be frustrating when trying to briefly rank for periods that would be incredibly profitable (trends, events, holidays) and having extremely unlucky fluctuations, but average site fluctuations don't bother me. This is especially true once your income is spread over many sites. You've got to learn to detach yourself from the results. Stick with it.

Sadly Google Penguin may have included your keywords, got trapped and devalued to be replaced in order to recover search rankings. But I sympathize your loss bro :)

it's a general case of algorithm and keyword updates from google, been there, so I sympathize, but you've gotta keep up and get used to it

No one really knows exactly how google ranks and decides site by site so just lower your expectations

Don't get amotionally attached to your sites, especially when you are doing blackhat. If you are getting a link based penalty, just backup the site, remove the content from the old site, put the old domain on expire, get a new domain, fire up the content again, game on.

If you can't be 100% sure it's really a penalty, just wait and see how it works out, build new sites in the meantime. Don't sit back if one site is ranking great and making you a lot of money, always keep in mind it could be the last day this site makes any money at all.

Yes, loosing some heavy hitter isn't fun, but it's part of the business...and if you can rank one site for high traffic terms, you can repeat this again and again and rank other sites, too. You already mastered the hardest part, rinse and repeat, try to outsource the grunt work.

Check your anchor text ratio, try to use more natural anchors. Also, there is no much you can do other than waiting for things to settle down. The past few weeks Google Earth has been unstable, Penguin 4.0 earthquake is shaking the WWW dynasty.

The latest Penguin Update has affected lots of sites lately including your sites. So you're not the only one facing this kind of problem. If you went down be sure to make a COMEBACK,
Review your last sites, find what they lack and improve them.
I mean, you've already made it to the top, haven't you? So why not again?

Thanks everyone for the advice

I have been taking a good look at the sites and I think its the anchor text ratio that's the biggest cause of my problems, I have a far too big a percentage of exact match anchors.

Can any one recommend a good package here on BHW i could use to build up some anchor diversity?

If anchor ratios are the problem, I'd prefer the remove links/disavow links. The number of links needed to dilute let's say 30% exact match down to 5% is very high and probably only makes it worse.

Don't see it as a failure, you succeeded in ranking your keywords and got knocked down like most do. Keep at it man.

How about now, where it is settled or still its dancing.

Yeah it has settled down now, all the keywords that were jumping around are now outside the top 300 and staying there
