Hi there guys.. I'm quite a newbie in SEO

So here is the deal: I've been optimizing a site for SEO, and I achieved pretty good results in a relative short period of time (about 2-3 weeks) for some related keywords.

Now, for the 2 big keywords I was focusing on I still am at about 150/300th position in Google.

But for some close related keywords, I was already appearing in the top 10 search results.

Today, I check my rankings, and to my surprise I don't appear in the top 10 anymore, but in the 700th position or something!

Is Google testing me? (My Site is new, so I don't have "Trust")
    Was I penalized by Google?

Should I simply keep building backlinks and keep improving the site, or is it over?
I have been using Paul's and Angela's Backlinks to get me moving, and have been social bookmarking the backlink sites in order for them to get indexed.

    Any advice? THANKS!

yup, just keep doing your seo, especially backlinks.

Add more content using LSI keywords as well as your normal keywords.

    You'll be back soon enough

I highly doubt its the sandbox, really depends on how old your site is and the backlinks you have. Google is notorious for doing the "Google Dance". However, If you are using Angela's links, you have to keep building the links past what she gives you or spread them out.

Although the Google Sandbox is still a frustrating inevitability and there is no quick fix way limit the amount of time a website spends confined to it, patiently sitting by waiting for this confinement to end is a waste of what could be a golden opportunity. Google pays a lot of attention to sites in the Sandbox making confinement to the Sandbox an ideal time to really let your website shine. During this time give Google what it wants to see; regularly updated relevant content, lots of new pages and a sustained increase in the number of inbound links. Not only could this improve your sites ranking within the SERPS once its confinement to the Sandbox is over, but it will pay dividends for your site in general by providing its visitors with the information they require.

I am inclined to believe that your site is going through the Google Dance. I agree you need to build more unique content, more pages, and more backlinks using your chosen keywords as the anchor text.

What about your competition? Is it huge, or do you have few competing pages?

The thing is.. I have competition, and the first results are from famous sites.

These sites have 100k+ backlinks to the SITE (DOMAIN), but to the PAGE, ALL the pages from PAGE 1 have less than 20 backlinks approx. each (external)

What carries more weight? linkdomain? or page links?

yea your pretty much screwed. had it happen to one of my older sites. rankings never came back even after cleaning everything up. bfft
if your site is new it could be the sandbox, but d\do keep in mind that you can be there for a loooooooooong time.
