    Alright guys,

Like many others here, I want to make this journey thread to (a) keep myself motivated, (b) pick up any tips and advice that I can, and (c) keep myself sane.

My IM journey started a little over 2 years ago. I built 3 niche sites from scratch, took the time to write 5-10 500+ word articles for each site, manual linkbuilding, the whole 9 yards. Adsense profits from all that after 1 year? $0.02. Literally.

So I left the sites to sit for awhile and do their thing, actually forgot about them for many months as I:
    1. Graduated from law school
    2. Moved to Miami
    3. Met an amazing Latina
    4. Proposed to said Latina
    5. Moved in together
    6. Got a job as a lawyer
    7. Bought a puppy

Fast forward to a year later. I love life in Miami, and hate my job with a fiery passion. Well, not just the job, I've had more than one job as a lawyer. It's more the career that's the problem. You know it's not a good sign when every day you wake up and think "DAMN. I have to go to the office again."

BUT, about 4 months back, I was sent an automatic reminder that my domain names had been renewed. "Damn", I thought, "I forgot all about them". So I log in to adsense and, well, what do you know, I had about $100 sitting in there. A mini-lightbulb went off in my head and I thought, if nothing else, I can keep these sites going for some extra food and wine money (Miami is expensive).

So I did some research, educated myself on SEO, proper adsense placement, got some better-suited WP themes, etc. 6 months later (now), those sites are averaging $20/day each, roughly $1,800/month total. Not bad, but by Miami standards, I'm poor.

So what's my goal? At the minimum, I'd like to double my current earnings. If I can get to $3,600/month, I can quit my job. Obviously I'll make less than I do now, but my future-wife is a doctor, so we're set. This is more for my sanity and desire to actually enjoy waking up for a day of work ahead of me. I love online work, finding tips and tricks to earn money here and there.

I'm working on setting up an offline seo/internet marketing company as well. I have the llc formed, logo designed, business cards on the way, and am working on the first batch of 100 letters ready to send out (I forget whose method it is, but I'm using a method of contacting businesses I found on here, so thank you!).

My plan is to keep this updated to motivate myself, learn from ALL the great knowledge that you guys offer, and possibly help anyone who is more of a n00b than I am (if that is even possible).

    Cheers to the journey!

I'm quite shocked that 1800$/mo makes you poor in Miami, in my country half of this sum is avg payment and that puts you in the "middle". However I wish you all the best with your journey.

I know. It's crazy, but true. For many cities in the US, actually...NYC, Chicago, Boston, DC...it's expensive! But thanks for the well wishes.

GobBluthJD, how many adsense sites do you have? New to adsense myself and am just curious for how many sites it may take to get up to $1800 a month, even.

Good luck. Posts like these inspire me to continue on learning internet marketing. As a current freelance writer, I am fairly interested in learning internet marketing. I just can't seem to find the right resources.

Congratulations on getting started. And congratulations on the earnings.

Stay hungry, keep focused, be tenacious and scale whatever works.

Sounds like you have your priorities straight, and you'll make it.

    Will be following your journey.

Total? I have 6 adsense sites, 3 of which are my main earners. The fourth is slowly starting to become profitable in the past month. The other 2 were learning mistakes.

I also have 2 other sites that I'm trying to figure out how to monetize, because the niches don't really lend themselves to adsense, but I know I should be able to sell something with the amount of traffic they are getting.

I also have a site that I fully outsourced through Guru, because it's much more in-depth than my coding knowledge could handle. This site will be selling about 15 different ebooks that I've written over the past year dealing with visas and immigration to the U.S. (I figured I should use my law degree for something, right? :p ) It's been built and tweaked, books have been uploaded, each has their own page, it's a pretty massive site. Stripe has been added for a shopping cart function. I'm just waiting for my team to finish with Ramadan and then it will be final testing and going live. I'm hoping this site will eventually turn into my main breadwinner, as it will be a lot more stable than anything Adsense-related.

Oh, also, to those that PM'd me, I don't have enough posts to respond yet, sorry!

Honestly, the way I started learning was reading every Beginner's Guide thread I could. Here, at Digital Point, at Warrior Forum. There's some contradicting information of course, we're all human. But the main nuggets of wisdom remained constant in all those threads, so I stuck with focusing on those tried and true methods.

The other thing that really helped is: Just try something. Anything. I've made huge mistakes. My first niche site I built before I even understood the difference between "exact" searches and "broad" searches in google keywords. I was so gung-ho about that first site after looking at google keywords and seeing 60,000 local searches or something like that. Built the whole site in WP, wrote articles, marketed like crazy through article submissions, etc. ONLY then, after reading a beginner's thread here, did I realize there was actually something called "exact" search. Imagine my horror when I looked up my golden keyword again and found there was only a hundred or so searches. Whoops. Needless to say, I ditched that site and it never made me a penny. BUT the learning experience was priceless. I'm much more careful now and it was a good kick in the pants to step up my game.

So if you're thinking of getting started in learning: just do it.

So yesterday, as I was gathering the last few names for my direct mail campaign, I got a call. Turns out this guy had seen an ad that I placed on CL. Nice. I didn't think anything would actually come from those ads! He wants to know what I can do with google rankings. I tell him to send me his website so I have a better idea of what we're working with. So I reviewed his (ugly) site and saw some quick changes. He told me to send him over a proposal, which I did last night, with my advised steps and my fees.

How long should I wait to call him back? Today? Give him a day to review it? I've never had a paying offline client before, so I'm a bit lost on the standard way to contact and make the sale....but he sounded like a hopeful lead!

I keep trying to update this thread but my posts keep going to moderation and then don't get posted :(

But fear not, I have big updates, and if the mod system ever allows it, I will update this thread with the latest news!

Let's see if this let's me update.....

I've had fairly little success with Craigslist/Backpage ads. I've had mixed success with direct mail campaign and email campaign.

I've had GREAT success with the good old-fashioned networking and word-of-mouth. Yes, that's right. I know it sounds like a broken record, but it really does work. I know a few people in the small business world, so I proposed an offer (most small business people are always keen to at least listen to an offer). They spread the word about my company/services, and anyone that signs up and mentions them, the original person gets a 20% referral fee (I've since dropped that to 10%, and people are still coming).

The thing I've found about small business owners is (1) they have a LOT of other small business owner friends, and (2) they LOVE to talk business with each other, even if it's not their own business.

So these few contacts of mine went out and talked up a storm, spread my name, website, email, phone number around, and my phone actually started ringing. Shocking, I know. I was shocked too. But it worked.

Pizza is here, celebrating tonight, I'll be back with the story after! :p

Poor in Miami, rich in Czech. Average salary here is $1200/month. So you should move to Europe :D

Haha believe me man, I'm trying to convince my fiancée that we should move. I've been to quite a few spots in Europe that I wouldn't mind living, and my current online income would be just fine....I'm not giving up in convincing her :p
