I wanted to make a new thread for my third published book on Kindle.
So far, I've made about $45 from this journey. I embarked on this wonderful adventure less than 2 weeks ago, and I've had lots of fun so far.

I'm currently writing the last words of my third book, which I will publish tomorrow morning.

I plan on publishing a fourth book (which will belong to the same series as the first three) before the end of August 2014.

How did I just write a book(let) in less than 3 hours?

I had been thinking about this precise book idea for days, and had already jotted down tons of ideas, so that made things much simpler.
I also wrote in my native language, because I'm kind of a slow writer in English.
Moreover, I've been blessed with decent grammar and spelling, which is always a plus when you want to write a book fast.
I type around 70 words a minute, which isn't that much, but enough to write a book quickly.
I don't use Dragon Naturally Speaking or anything fancy, just Word and my motivation.

I love the final result. I think the book I wrote is very original. I know there's NOTHING like it in the current book and e-book market, and it has the potential to be a fun and informative read.

I know it's barely longer than 4,000 words, but that's fine.
    I've seen 15-page e-books sell really well, and I guess 4,000 words= 25 pages.

    CURRENT GOAL:
Make 2 euros a day for one year. (~$3)
I need one sale per day to reach my goal.
So far, my goal seems reachable. We will see!

The e-book I published last night is now online. It looks good, but I haven't worked on its description yet. I want the description to be really polished, so I'll take my time to update it. For now, I've basically used parts of the beginning of the book as a filler until I get around to writing something that looks more like a sales copy.

For some reason, I won't accept to do a KDP promotion on my new books. I just don't want to give them away for free. :(

I was not paid for my sale on August 11th, so I sent a mail to support.
I guess maybe my buyer asked to be reimbursed. It would be strange, since my book has no formatting issues. There's no trace of a reimbursement on my report.
Azn might not have gotten the money from the customer, who knows...

I hope this doesn't happen again, and if it does, I want to be told WHY I'm not getting paid.
My book is 100% original, and I got paid for my sale today, so it's a real mystery why they're holding "old" money from August 11th.

I know that most people here won't understand why I'm getting worked up over $3, but I'm still a student, and despite my efforts to look for a job, I can't find one at the moment.

    Your goal: 1 sales/day x 365 days = 365 sales/year. And 2 euros x 365 days = 730 euros.

Keep updating this thread for one year. :D

Don't expect to hit the jackpot with only one book.
Write many. Some will fail and some succeed.
If you can knock out one a month or more you will be surprised.

Thank you all for your encouragement and feedback. :)

So far, I've fallen a little behind sales-wise, so I might not make the desired 700€ after all.

I have a BIG concern, and would like someone to help me out with this:
If I put up my books for free and someone pirates them, Azn could (and will) take them off KDP and possibly off Azn altogether, right?
Then, they'll close my account, right? :(

Okay, so since I don't want that to happen, for now, no free promo...

I kinda have bad news: I still haven't heard from Azn regarding the missing money.
Hopefully, I'll get a mail tomorrow morning...

Also, I just received an e-mail saying they're upping the KU/KDP funds for July... which probably means every author who got lots of borrows (I got 7) will get screwed somehow.
I mean, they only upped it a bit because the total $ per borrow was ridiculously low, right?

Do you guys have any advice to get into the children's books writing niche?
Where could I get public domain or CC licensed pictures? They don't need to be professional-looking.

I've decided I'd rather sell my books at 0.99€ for now, so I'll probably change the prices soon. Wish me luck!

    Wow. Okay okay okay.
I still don't know where my money for the sale I made on August 11th went but:
3 SALES TODAY! And they're still priced at 2.99€ because I didn't have the heart to sell them at 0.99€. Ya know what, they are quality e-books, I'm not going to just give them away.

So, I'm ahead of schedule again and on my way to the 700€ I want :D

Like I said, I have 3 books, it's a series. (And I haven't marketed or really taken care of book 3, and anyway it shouldn't be in the series IMO.)

Book 1 is the main book that's still selling. However, someone liked book 1 so much that they bought book 2! :D

That's really, really good. It means that I might not have to go through the free promotion route after all.

Hi Selena, I've been keeping an eye on your journey for a while. I wish you all the best. My question is how did you get rid of the 1-star review that you posted about in the last thread?

SALES SO FAR & MY GOAL:
32.32 euros in sales (16 sales)
    + 6 actual borrows (gain in € will be around 1.1€ minimum)= 6.6 €

38.32 / 2.02 = 19 days worth of sales already with the borrows!

    FYI 38.32€... +$51 OMG!

Current challenge has been running for 18 days, I'm ahead. :D

I requested for the comment to be removed about 5 times, stating different reasons it should be removed each time.
It's not black hat or anything, I was just lucky the comment broke A*n's TOS.

Also, I got told I won't be paid for the book I sold on August 11st, because the order wasn't "finalized". I don't know what that means in layman's terms.

I'm going to explain what I understood from the e-mail I got, as I'm pretty sure many authors are interested by this.

Guys, the sales chart (of your books) you see with all the red and blue (reports) is just an estimate.

I don't know if that takes into account books that have not been checked out yet, but it's not your real sales figures.
If you've not been paid for the book yet in your excel report, it's like the sale never happened.

EDIT: Urgh, after reading the help pages, I still don't understand everything, but it seems that just putting a book in your cart is like placing an order, so I'll see a sale on my sales report.
However, I'll only get money for orders that have been completed.

My book was briefly number 1 in its category :D

Glad to see you're doing well, but why not continue in your 'old' journey thread?
Children's book require lots of illustrations -> bigger size of the book -> less cash for you.
But if you are good in using AI or corel to do the pictures yourself, go ahead.

I-marketer, you didn't read the post above, I'm done with my journey.
Thank you for the encouragement, though.
I only made a new journey thread because I had big plans, but I have TONS of stuff to do in real life and just no time for IM.

    Just to clarify...

15 August - You are ahead of sales target.
16 August - No more sales
17 August - Your giving up.

    Well, yeah.
I've decided to concentrate on getting a real job, which I think is the smartest thing I could do right now.
Also, I already had to file a DMCA takedown because the sole book I gave away for free has been pirated and is currently online, protected by a content locker.

I bet whoever did that is making more money than me with my own book.

The plan was to give one of my two other books away, but after that, I just can't.

Azn will ban me if they find out about that content locker page with my book on it.

What's funny is that there are very little books on that DL website, just mine and maybe 20 others.

I am NOT against pirating. Heck, I'd give my first book away to get sales on the other ones (and that's pretty much what I did).

However, if I get a slap on the wrists or worse because some idiot is making me breach an exclusivity agreement with Azn, that's just stupid.

    So anyway, I'm out.

Or you could try NOT giving away your books for FREE on Amazon and adding digital rights protection when you upload it!

Tons of books get pirated and put online Amazon don't ban everyone who's book gets pirated else they would have no authors left.

What happens if it goes really well on day 1 of your "real job", then on day 2 it is a bit shitty, will you quit that as well?

To make money online or anywhere for that matter you need to stick at it and when something goes wrong fix it, not quit and run to the next thing.

    Keep at it!

Definitely get a 'real' job as well, at least to pay your bills for the time being, but writing makes a great hobby for your evenings & weekends. :)

EDIT: I unpublished my books. Better that way. Good luck to everybody else.

Currently running a fever so excuse my grammar/spelling in case they get affected... you never know.

Azn just re-published a "modified" version of the 1-star comment I got when I published my first book. That's a big issue, and pretty much the last straw.

Gringo Monkey, I know you don't give your books away, but some of us have no choice, I have no good social media account, and I have to do some publicity one way or another.

Sure, the 1-star comment was caused by my giving away the book, but I also got sales thanks to that, so what was I supposed to do?

Like I said, I'm in the process of getting a real job. I'm not a quitter, I've worked before, and people were very satisfied with my work, so that's not the issue.

I think that looking for a job and studying already takes up (too?) much of my time, and that I cannot invest hours and hours into writing.

I'm disgusted by the 1-star comment, the plummeting sales chart, and just people's cruelty in general.
I was badly bullied for over a decade, and I don't take too well to being bullied on Azn too, probably by a competitor.
It's funny how the other people who give books away don't get bad comments.

The good way to run free promo is to have 5+ good reviews before (use exchange here for ex.) Then one 1star rating won't get much weight.
You said you didn't wanna go this way, but as you can see it's only a business. And business is tough, mainly on places with no entry barriers (like amazon kdp).

Will you get at least your earnings paid out?
