So I have been a lurker here for years, just reading and dabbling in various things here and there. The thing is, I never committed to anything and never really got anywhere with those things. So, today I am committing to this journey. I am a student in college currently pursuing a computer science major (programming) and the crazy part is I have a kid on the way. So my goal is to have a steady, modest income set up before that happens.
I have been working on an Instagram account for a while; I have that at 8k followers for now and growing quickly, its fun and relaxing so it doesn't feel like work really. Hopefully I can get that to a point where it brings me some lunch money, but if not, oh well.

Mainly I am trying to get into the web design business targeting local/small businesses and then I will be setting them up with my reseller hosting for a recurring income and constant connection to them. Additionally I hope to offer other services as upsells such as google places, seo, and updates. If you have more ideas I would love to hear them.

Right now I am working on setting up a site for this business and should have that done soon, I plan on finding my first clients through yellow pages and craigslist. After that maybe classified ads? I would really appreciate suggestions on more places. My biggest stumbling block is that I wouldn't consider myself a sales person. Cold calling is just not something I am good at. I might try walk-ins because I am a confident and like-able person to most, and can carry a good conversation. I guess time will tell.

That is all I will write for now as I have a class to go to, I hope you will follow this, support me, and give me advice to help this journey be successful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

Good luck on your journey, this is something I plan to do in the near future.

I have a few points that come to mind:

    - how do you hope to reach a figure of $2000 a month?

    - how much are you considering selling your sites for?

    - I would not just consider targetting clients without sites. You may have more success targetting owners with crappy sites, as at least they recognise the need for a website, they just need a decent one designing for them.

    - As for cold calling, what is the worst that can happen? The client says no, you move onto the next one.

    - When I start looking for potential clients I will mix cold calling with sending detailed letters to clients outlining how my website will benefit their business. I think this personal touch might impress a few clients.

    - Lastly, you will find some golden information on this forum, especially in the Offline / ORM sections. Methods and tips used there can be easily be adapted to your journey.

Keep us informed on your journey!

Oh, and sorry for not answering the other questions,

This part of my journey will end when I make $2,000 a month twice in a row from the web design work + upsells (hosting, google places, seo, etc)
then I will probably head for $5,000 and finally $10,000.

I plan on selling my first sites at a low cost, maybe around $200 in order to hopefully get referrals coming in along with a few testimonials. After those first ones I plan on slowly raising my rates.
The hosting I was think of pricing around $5-$10 a month (do you think I can go higher than that?)
I am not sure what to price other services at though.

And yes, the worst that can happen is them saying "no" which has happened about 15 times so far and doesn't really bother me. I just feel I will get a much better appointment/closing rate with people if i see them in person.

And I might try that letter idea, sounds like it would be better than calling :)

Good luck! You're entering a very crowded, yet very profitable marketplace.

Will keep an eye on this thread.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to follow this, I hope to get some great advice from some of you out there that have gone down similar paths.

    DAY 1

Today I went through Craigslist and responded to all the ads that I felt were relative and I just got a response back from one of the people. They are a photographer and are just looking for a simple site with a gallery, they mentioned an update/maintenance plan which seems like a good sign that they have thought this through, we haven't settled for a price (any suggestions on pricing for this?) I was thinking only around $200 since I need to add to my portfolio.
*EDIT I also made an ad listing in craigslist, hopefully I will get something though that. endOfEDIT*

I also have spent a lot of time in making my website and hope to have it finished tomorrow. As time goes on I plan to add a testimonial section to the site. I also would like to add a section with pricing for additional services but I don't know what to price them at and could really use advice. (google places + ect, seo, orm)

Also I am thinking of getting "freelance" sales people. Basically telling them that if they can get a person to buy a site from me for x dollars then I will give them $50 cash if the person mentions that they were referred by them.

That is what I got done today, I will probably work on finishing up the site for now and feel free to ask me questions.

Remember, advice is more than welcome and greatly appreciated :)

Congratulations regarding building the site for the photographer. As regards to pricing, you need to bear in mind that he will be at weddings / christenings etc every week so he will probably want his site's portfolio updating frequently. This will be a pain in the arse so you need to make it worth your while.
As regards pricing for other services, I would just set a minimum fee or no fee at all on your site so when a potential client approaches you, you can give the impression you are offering an individually tailored service. It also means you can charge more for bigger clients.

If you are using wordpress for the websites you can give them a login name and a tutorial on how to add content and pictures. By using this you wont need to edit the content yourself all the time.

Thanks for the feedback, I will probably try to set up a nice looking wordpress site to make it easier for them to maintain it. I will post a summary of what I have done today later, I still have quite a bit I want to get done still!

    Day 2

So I didn't get as much done today as I wanted to. I had 2 midterms so that slowed me down. I got my site for this business mostly finished (minor, insignificant changes left), online, and indexed in google. I am planning on possibly making a blog for the site and target local keywords to help this site rank higher. Other than that I didn't really do much else other than some research. I am quite happy with how much i did do with the site though. I have a testimonial page made and waiting for when I have 3 to add to it.

Anyone have any tips on where to look for some leads? I am planning on going through a YellowBook directory, but if someone has a better suggestion that would be much appreciated.
I will be able to work on stuff a lot tomorrow, hopefully I will have stuff sorted out with my client by then. If not then I guess I will start putting together a site for something, maybe the blog.

Stay Tuned for more updates, I hope to update daily; and no worries guys, I won't be abandoning this journey. I will succeed, I will make this work. And as a quote I really like says, "I am a great fan of luck, and the harder I work the more I seem to have." I'll be back tomorrow.

    Day 3

Today I realized that i had forgotten to set up the billing, so i worked that out, set up my htaccess file and did some minor layout modifications. I spent quite a bit of time stating to set up the skeleton of a site for later use.

I responded to some craigslist ads, no more responses thus far, and started looking into some stuff in the marketplace here that I could resell thanks to a pm from someone that got me thinking. I did end up getting sidetracked and looking at other random threads on bhw

After this I was slightly stressed so I played around on insta a little bit and gained some followers there. I don't know where I can go with it though. The plan is to hopefully sell some shoutouts for some to start with and then promote brands eventually.. I might start a separate journey thread for that though. It is much less stressful than this so it would serve as some relaxing time and whatnot.

That pretty much sums up today, I will hopefully post another update tomorrow. stay tuned!

    Day 4

So today I worked on building a list of possible leads, I got about 40 that I am going to call and talk to tomorrow. I also did some research on seo and whatnot for when I make a blog to help rank this site for local terms.

That's about it. I used today to do most of my homework so that I can work on this every single day. I don't think that I will need a day off, not while I want to make this work so much.

I would like to ask on advice for selling points with the websites. Could you guys possibly help me out with that? If so thank you very much in advance :) I'll be back tomorrow, bookmark this and join me on my first journey. Cheers

Thank you! I will stick to this until I succeed, then I will either continue down this road, do another journey, or both

I have never even played with Facebook advertising and am not sure how to do it effectively or make it convert well. Do you have any tips for this or a couple threads to point me to?
