FYI, this is not your normal journey post that is kept active for a few months then no longer updated. I plan on updating weekly for one entire year.

Prior to January 2014 I have never tried CPA marketing nor bothered learning much about it. I live in the USA and work a full time day job. I have 2 young kids (6 months and 4 years old) so my hands are full.

My prior IM experience: For the last 3-4 years I've been creating websites on Clickbank products, getting them ranked, making sales, then cashing them in on Flippa for a $x,xxx profit. I've done this as needed to supplement my primary income (I have a full time day job). I have averaged about $4,000 a year doing this. I was also an affiliate for Warrior Forum products averaging about an extra $500 or so each year for the past few years.

Why I'm changing: I'm burned out and so in 2014 I want to start something new. If you don't really enjoy what you are doing then it's hard to make yourself do it more. That something new is CPA marketing. I'm tired of always having to play by Google's algorithm rules so I'm stay away from that and with CPA marketing. I want to learn CPA, implement it, test it, and then re-implement the final product. I'm going to be focused on PPL (pay per lead) offers at first then may go on to PPS (pay per sale) offers eventually.

    My budget: roughly $4,500

Here are my goals for 2014

Majority of January - Learn CPA, purchase some CPA guides, sign up for CPA networks, study!

    Here are my $ goals:

By end of March - $50/day or $1,500/month
By end of June - $100/day or $3,000/month
    By end of 2014 - $300/day or $9,000/month

Here is what I'll disclose in this thread and what I won't: I'll post what I learned, as well as details of what I'm doing (whether it works or not). I will not post my exact landing page, banners, or offers. I'll give you as much detail as possible without just handing it to you (if that makes sense) as this is a learning process for me as well as others.

I know we are already 2/3 into January at the time of this post so I haven't been lazy I have been making progress.

Here is what I've done so far:

Beginning of Jan - read all I can on Warrior Forum, BHW, and other free materials about CPA marketing. Other then studying this month here is what I did:

01/11/14 - Purchased membership to GreedReports (just Google it). You get a lot for $9 even though some of the information and links are outdated, you'll still learn a lot. Also, created account on BannerSnack to make banners quickly and easily (can't remember how much that was, but it was roughly $20/month). I need to probably learn how to do this in Gimp or Paint.net for free but instead I'm taking the easy way.
01/07-01/13 - Opened up accounts on Traffic Junky, CrakRevenue, POF (Plenty Of Fish) and ran some test ads. Spent about $45 total just getting my feet wet. No conversions.
01/13/14 - Submitted application to MaxBounty CPA network as well as Neverblue as well as some smaller ones but these were the two I'm interested in.
01/14/14 - Called and left message for MaxBounty AM (Affiliate Manager) to speed up application process, also left message for Neverblue. Opened up VPS hosting account at Beyond Hosting and installed Prosper202.
01/17/14 - Called and got ahold of my MaxBounty AM and got my account approved. Ran some more test ads and spent about $20. No conversions.
01/18/14 - Decided to create a Journey thread on BHW to help myself stay organized! ;)

    Spent so far: $114
    Revenue: $0

What I learned: I obviously haven't done what I wanted to do this month and just study CPA marketing. The take action and just do it part of me won out and I ran some ads and got my a$$ handed to me. All of these offers were direct linking with no landing page. That being said I've got my feet wet and accounts established with some great traffic sources. Greed Reports has helped a lot and I'm still reviewing information there. If you are applying for CPA Offer Networks such as MaxBounty it does pay to call them first, do not wait on them.

What I plan to do next
: Continue to review free and paid study materials, pause all ad campaigns, and create some unique landing pages that should warm up my traffic (may contact a designer for this). Will not spend anymore money unless I find a designer that can knock my socks off with a great landing page.

I plan on updating this weekly and on Saturday mornings (I'm in Central Time Zone). So next update will come 01/25 and every Saturday there after.

    Here's to a great 2014!

Nice project, It's really fine to start a long terme project. Will you only use PPv or do you plan to do some seo or other traffic method?

I do plan on trying PPV maybe in about a month or so. However, throughout I plan on driving traffic via networks such as POF and Traffic Junky on top of PPV. I would really like to get into TrafficVance. However, it takes a referral and my AM's won't do that until I prove to them I can actually make some conversions. I might try Lead Impact to get my feet wet with PPV.

This week was a very productive week. Sorry guys, no numbers yet as I have yet to really begin testing so it's gonna be slightly boring until that happens. No $1,000 days yet :D. I decided this week I'm going to try Adult CPA first then move those winning ideas over to Non-Adult CPA. Adult CPA is normally a few steps ahead of Non-Adult as far as banners/landing pages go so I'm going that route first. Going to run my first campaign next week.

    Here what I accomplished:

    01-18-14 through 01-25-14
    • Approved for Adsimilis CPA Network
    • Applied for Smash Revenue CPA Network
    • Application got approved for NeverBlue CPA Network (and sent them needed documentation for next step)
    • Downloaded and read (twice) Tuan's Adult Media Protocol Guide (Tuan is an elite Adult CPA marketer)
    • Joined Tuan's Private Forum and been reading post after post there - cost $99/month
    • Got a MVPS2 VPS at AmeriNOC (adult friendly host with great reputation among elite Adult CPA guys) - cost $60/month
    • Canceled VPS at Beyond Hosting
    • Purchased a trial of AdultAdSpy and downloaded a ton of banners - cost $9
    • Downloaded (free) HTTrack and sucked down some great landing pages that I'll edit to my own liking
    • Purchased iMobiTrax Tracking Software and been reading up on how to set it up for my first campaign - cost $150/month

    Things to Do Next Week
Setup 2 different Landing Pages to Test (I'll use proven adult landing pages that have worked for others in the past, just edit it slightly with my images). I'll create 20 different banners as well. Then I'll take out the winning LP and top 5 banners. Then I'll test with those and pick the winning banner/LP combo. I'll first try this on Traffic Junky as suggested.

    Bottom Line
    Expenses Revenue
    $432 $0

Thanks guys for subscribing. I'll either succeed or blow through $4,000 :10:.

I knew going into this that the startup costs would be high on the front end and it might be awhile before I start making money. That being said, I'm treating this like a business and that is almost always how it works out for them (high startup cost, not making money for awhile). I'll create a LLC here soon in maybe a month if I start to see some success.

you could have browsed some porn sites for free to see what was working, there isn't that much variety out there anyway and adultadspy hasn't got the most accurate data either

you could have run your adult campaigns through Beyond

Imobitrax you probably didn't need just starting out, you can rotate landers etc just as well with Bevo for free and it's much easier to use too, that would have been time and money saved, maybe you're planning on starting with mobile in which case Imobitrax might be best.

If you're doing adult I would recommend starting at Exoclick or if you want to do cpm Traffic Force has awesome quality with lower cpms than Traffic Junky, better testing banners at 5c/click and then taking your best ones over to cpm in my experience

I see you've been doing little tests a few $ here and a few $ there, that's cool, but 20 banners prob isn't going to work for that, you won't get enough to go on that way, if your going to give each banner $20 that would be $400 to test your first batch, $200 even if you only give each one $10

your costs don't have to be high at all on the front end with adult, that money you've spent could have gotten you 8640 clicks on Exoclick and I bet you'd have learned a lot more by now than you have with paid forums and stuff

not trying to be a know it all or anything honestly, just I've been on exactly the same journey as you and made a lot of mistakes this last year, spent a lot of money on stuff I didn't need, lost money where I didn't need too and I'm still not claiming to be an expert

pick an offer with the help of your AM, grab the first rules lander you see that you think would work with your offer, throw 5 banners up on Exoclick or Traffic Force (something similar to what you see working and that matches your offer) and you'll make 75% of your money back from day 1, sometimes you'll be straight in to profit but that's a lot harder than it was even a year ago, after that it's just a matter of doing more of what's working and less of what's not

    Wow that's a big post...

    1. I didn't purchase AdultAdSpy, I just did the 5 day - $10 trial. It wasn't what I needed so I didn't pay the $100 and I canceled it. I have been doing my own free research. I found a great lander just yesterday that is perfect for what I want to do.
    2. Some people have had luck starting out with Traffic Force, so I might switch to that eventually if I fail with Traffic Junky but since I really haven't ran my first full campaign there I can't jump to that yet.
    3. I agree, 20 banners to begin testing with is way to much. I've decided to just do 4-5 to start out with.
    4. I started out with iMobiTrax because I wanted all of my data up front with the best tracker. Sure, I could have used a free tracker, but I would rather go with the best up front and go from there. If I'm not making money this month I may switch to a free tracker to save some money for more testing.
    5. I'm not sure what you meant by making money with paid forums? I didn't advertise on a forum, I joined a private adult forum to get some instant knowledge. I've gotten my $100 back easily from what I have learned there so far in my opinion.

Thanks for the response though...I'll definitely consider your recommendations with Exo and Traffic Factory. I knew going into this I'll probably blow through $1,000+ before I make really any money. Adult CPA is not cheap.

This week wasn't as productive as I wished with the bad weather I lost almost 2 days of work. That being said I did make some progress

    01-26-14 through 02-01-14
    • I got approved for SMASH Revenue Adult Network!
    • Got a great AM at SMASH, guy has been around awhile and is very well respected in adult cpa.
    • I switched my hosting once again. The reason being I got offered a dedicated hosting plan at Beyond that I've been wanting for awhile but they have been sold out. I got an email they got some in and so I jumped on it. You might be asking why do you need a dedicated server already? Well I really don't at the moment but I was thinking if I'm running campaigns I don't want to have to stop several days to switch servers.
    • Ran a small test campaign (5 banners - 4 banners on one site, 1 banner on another site...all through Traffic Junky). I got quite a few clicks to my lander on the one site that I only had 1 banner. This is cheap traffic, ($0.02 - 0.03 cpm) so I only spent about $5. Did not convert any leads but after playing with my lander I was using the link to go to the offer was below the fold plus I was getting a Javascript error pop-up every other time I pulled up the lander. Might be the reason I didn't get any conversions. Scrapped that lander.
    • Found a great lander that I customized for myself by clicking on banners at different adult sites.
    • Created 4 banners to test with my new banner, and focusing only on the one site I found.
    • Created campaign in Traffic Junky, and uploaded banners. Just gotta wait until Monday before they get approved.

    Things to Do Next Week
    • I'm going to let this ad run all week and review my results. No pausing, no excuses now.
    • Inlaws are coming in this weekend, so next weekend production will come to a halt for 3 days :D

    Bottom Line
    Expenses Revenue
    $597 $0

    1. Sorry, hadn't realized you had cancelled.

    2. Traffic Junky is a hard one to get right that's all, I wouldn't go there without a decent budget built up.

    3. Good stuff :)

    4. It's a good tracker, can't deny that, I just can't see you learning that much extra at this stage that's worth another $150. Whatever works for you though.

    5. I meant that $100 you spent for the forum membership could have bought you 2000 clicks, you're going to get some conversions with that 2000 clicks unless you do something really dumb, and you will learn far more from those conversions than you will from forums. Finding which offer, banner and lander to run and which placements they will work on is the hard part, unless they tell you that then really you are on your own.

Please don't think you need to blow through $1k before you make anything back on adult, it's easily one of the cheapest things to get in to.

Good to hear you got a good affiliate manager at SMASH though, those are pretty rare, try and make the best of that. Sounds like you know that anyway :)

    Good luck with it all.

Thanks, how much are you making with Adult CPA? You are actually one of the first to tell me it's one of the cheapest. I've always heard it's a tough nut to crack but once you figure what works and what doesn't, then you'll easily recover all of your losses.

With Traffic Junky I'm not targeting the expensive NTV (next to video) spots so my traffic is cheap and it'll allow me to figure out what works and what doesn't work. Once I get my sales funnel down perfect I'll move to those spots. I'm keeping Traffic Factory in my back pocket as well as Excoclick. If by end of FEB I'm not making much of anything at Traffic Junky I'll try a different traffic source. However, one thing I've seen most newbies do in Adult CPA is try multiple traffic sources and not figuring out any of them. They all work, you just gotta figure out what works and what doesn't. I should have some good data by end of week on this banner placement.

I tried POF a little before I started on Traffic Junky. POF is very picky about where the link goes, so they may not approve based on your offer you select from CrakRevenue. However, I do think it could be a goldmine for the guys there if you could just get past the ad/banner approval. Good luck!
