I've been freelancing since five years ago and a member of this forum for a couple of years. Mostly I'm here lurking, visiting once in a while. Just for context, I'm starting this thread because I already have something in place -- set it all up two weeks ago and I just remembered that I can share my progress here to hopefully inspire people.

Now, another important detail you need to know is that for 7 months I have been curating a general niche blog, and I've sold it for $12000. It started earning a steady $1500/mo during its 5th month. I decided to sell out because I needed the money. This was two months ago, and since then I've been working as a freelance writer to save up money.

With my self-proof that I can make a general niche site earn $1500/mo within 5 months, and with enough savings to start 2 new micro niche sites, I'm setting my goal to $5000/mo in 5 months.

Here's what I did so far, taking you back from 2 weeks ago. 10/19/2015 was the start of my 3rd week.

    1. $0.99 + $0 - For the domains. One from GoDaddy and one from 1and1. I'm not affiliated with any of them. I'm a cheap person, so I went for them.
    2. $40 - Bought an all-purpose WordPress theme on Themeforest.
    3. $25 - For a good medium range VPS.

It took me 2 days to setup the two websites. I've done my keyword research using Market Samurai (which I got for free from my previous client). But mostly I researched for keywords and microniche by Googling nonstop until I found two small niches that has the potential to earn serious money without the competition.

I started writing content. 500 to 1000 words for each site, two of these per day for each site. Right now, due to unforeseen circumstances, I only have 12 articles for each site.

    Social Media: Just Facebook.

Each of the site I launched are promoting a specific product. Site 1 compares two competing products.
Site 2 has only one product.

Quick Stats from the 1st week:

Traffic for the first week for Site 1: 54
Traffic for the first week for Site 2: 68

Total clicks to my Site 1 CTA buttons: 23
Total clicks to my Site 2 CTA buttons: 3

    Site 1 Total sales: $0
    Site 2 Total sales: $0

Quick Stats from the 2nd week:

Traffic for the first week for Site 1: 202
Traffic for the first week for Site 2: 254

Total clicks to my Site 1 CTA buttons: 62
Total clicks to my Site 2 CTA buttons: 19

    Site 1 Total sales: $120
    Site 2 Total sales: $0
    -------
    TOTAL EXPENSES: $65.99
    TOTAL EARNINGS: $120

    BALANCE: $54.01
    I'm already on the positive.
    -------

What did I do for the second week? I joined forums and became a daily contributor there. Also guest posted (400 words) on two blogs for the two websites.

For this week, I plan on spending more in advertising in order to boost traffic and sales. I will setup all the necessary marketing campaigns tonight and will post an update tomorrow on how everything went.

So far, so good. I've already made profits.

Nice to hear that you're already earning from your sites, that's an inspiration not all of us get to have in the beginning of our journey :) Good luck on your mate. ;)

Are you promoting CB products or something else? :)

Subscribing, sounds interesting, hope you will update this thread and answer questions :)

    I have two obvious ones:
    - where does your traffic comes from? Are u already ranking for some keywords or is it from forums/facebook?

    - how are u monetizing your traffic?

    Thanks and good luck!

Sure thing. Site 1 is a type of machinery. I'm trying to promote a relatively new company's product versus a more known one. Site 2's product is a digital product, bundle of video training materials, PDFs, ebooks, audio materials.

Site 1 - I found by searching online. Searches like.. "we are looking for affiliate marketers" or "earn by promoting our product" kind of keywords.

Site 2 - One of my past clients emailed me about it some time ago, thought I would find it useful since she knows I do IM too.

It's never easy, any year, any time! :D

    1. 90% of the traffic comes from forums. Nothing from Facebook yet and search engines, so I need to work on my keywords and content marketing. 10% of the traffic comes from other blogs that I guest posted on.

    2. No ads, just commissions from products sold through my sites.

    ------

By the way, I don't plan on using techniques that would get me bad reputation from search engines. No blackhat techniques (ironic because I'm on this site!). I won't be buying Fiverr followers and traffic and things like that. I'll use methods that I've learned from my previous clients (who obviously earn MORE by a great margin than me).

What I did since I posted this thread:

    1. Instead of a Facebook fan page, I joined relevant Facebook groups and will just focus on being a member of these groups. Maybe create one myself in the future. They already have an established member base.

    2. I spent a good chunk of my time writing free PDFs to start building a mailing list. Will provide them for free for subscribers.

    3. I'm currently writing more blog posts and will later update my site for better keywords, as the ones I initially used don't seem to work well.

    I'll update again tomorrow.

    Thanks for the interest!

Btw the traffic from forums - do you post links to your site or is this traffic from signatures?

Wow! Great job! I'm sensing a general theme in a lot of members success with niche sites: VPNs. I wonder how long these will last. I have avoided them due to the black hat nature and the start up cost. Your situation looks more affordable though.

From forum posts and messages, I'm yet to have a signature since I'm a relatively new member of the forums, but they are okay with links on posts as long as it's relevant and helpful.

    --

Anyway, I was too busy yesterday to write an update, and I don't think it warrants an actual update because most of what I did was to just set things up. But I now have a more solid method to get more traffic and ranking. However, it involves money and I'm still doing my research on the matter.

    Here's what I did:

    1. Created a profile for my target audience. Turns out, my target audience are people who are in their late 40s, retirees, seniors, you get the idea. People who aren't that techy but do read the news.
    2. With that in mind, I need to tap into news sites to get more exposure.
    3. Target market is US.
    4. I have setup ad retargetting so that those who visit my website will get to see ads about my website.

As for the traffic, it doesn't look that great, so I will just update with a weekly stats next week.

I also had a couple of people message me on the forums and through the websites asking for more information, and I've begun to use Agile CRM for them to keep track of leads.

I've also written a PDF based on the recurring questions I receive. Someone asks, I just send the PDF to them and they get all the answers they need.

I think, quite positively, that I can make Site 1 into a big authority site for its niche. :D

On the other hand, Site 2 is looking bleak. But I'm giving it a full month before I move on to a different venture. My plan is to have 2 simultaneous sites/businesses running at any given time and give each at least a month of bad performance before I drop them.

If ever I decide to drop Site 2, I will, in its stead, start a Service. Then I can dedicate 50% of my time writing and marketing for Site 1, and 50% for building up a service and marketing it.

Anyway, boring update today, more on planning and executing them without much result just yet.

    I'll update again soon.

    No Sales yesterday!
