Hi! I have been a long-time lurker of this forum but I have never joined the community so I guess it was about time.
As many of those who are here, I want to change my lifestyle and quick my job so I decided to start a new travel blog and push me hard to reach $5k per month and quick my job.

About me and my past projects

I know, I know, the first thing that you are wondering is how the hell $5k per month is such a huge milestone for me enough to quick my job. Basically, I am from the best country in the world but the bad thing about the best country in the world is that we can't be winners al the time so our economy is shit. I am actually lucky enough to earn $1.7k per month (which is huge here, trust me) so $5k is a great start to resign the stability of my full time job and level up a little bit my current lifestyle.

In 2019 I created my first travel blog, wrote 10 articles and sold it on March 2021 for $300 when the pandemic hit. At that time it was huge for me, my first online money! so I decided to keep the momentum going and start a new one in a different niche (renters advice)
The first site really took off, I created 15 articles, and never touched it again, however the site managed to get +25,000 visitors per month during its peak time and earn around $215. Last September I started to see some traffic decrease and I really needed the cash for my personal live so I sold it for $7.000 which again was HUGE FOR ME. I couldn't belive I was able to cash that amount of money with something that took me so little effort.

Why a travel site

After seeing how much money I made with some little time invested I decided it was time to really put myself to work and dedicate hours and hours to really change my life through niche websites.

Why did I choose such an over-saturated niche? well, I am ready to put the commitment but I need to be realistic about it, I won't tolerate spending hours and hours of my day writing in another language about something that I don't give a shit about, so I think it is better to choose something that I am passionate about even though it will take me more time to succeed with it.

I know it will be a challenge but my past experience showed me that I am actually not that bad with keyword research and understanding if and how can I outrank my competition so lets see if I can replicate that success again or not!

The strategy

I think that the future of niche websites is outside Google. Yes, Google is still our lord and master but with all the AI buzz around I really think that people will need to start putting more and more effort into diversifying their traffic.
I will focus on trying to write and rank as many posts as I can in the beginning but once I am seeing some traction I will move forward Instagram Reels, TikTok, and Facebook. Overall the 2023 strategy should look like this:

  • Next 3 months: write and post +30 posts (I will be traveling for a month during June-July so I have to be realistic about this number), create 1 Youtube video to complement the post that is performing the best (this will be done at the end of the month)
  • Aug-Sept-Oct: write at least 40 posts, and add one lead magnet and 1 youtube video to the best-performing post
  • Oct-Nov-Dec: let the first 70 posts sink (ok, maybe write 12 more posts) and focus on TikTok and Reels (same content at least for the start). Create a lead magnet or use the existing one to get emails from these social media accounts
  • 2024: In an ideal world the social media accounts should be getting me mail subscribers who I will monetize through a newsletter (paid spaces and affiliate links) and will drive traffic to the site that will also be monetized by ads. Let's cross fingers that this will work and that by January 2023 I will be earning at least enough money to outsource more articles and keep the social accounts alive.
Regarding keyword research, I bought a month of ahrefs and got like 300 keywords. I have a segment of 30 keywords about a particular destination and I will start with that cluster so I can gain some topical authority. However, in July I will be back from a trip from Europe where I will visiting some destinations that are starting to trend so I might put in pause that first cluster for a while to cover that unexploited destination and try to get some advantage.

Next steps

I have already bought a domain, designed the site using Generate Press and I have my first article 90% cooked. Lets see how it goes!

Good luck!

If you can take photos on location, and retain exif data that would really boost your posts and authority. That goes for any niche, but for a travel blog it can really set you part.

Thanks! I traveled to the destination of my first topic cluster last year so I am planning to use those photos (although they were iPhone photos and I didn't have this purpose in mind when I shoot them), now I am considering investing in a mirrorless camera before my trip but honestly I am not sure if it will make a difference because I have never used one and I don't think that I will be able to become a pro in less than two months.

BTW, if anyone knows how to keep the exif data on Wordpress I would really appreciate the help,https://www.quora.com/How-do-I-keep-the-image-EXIF-data-on-WordPress-Every-time-I-upload-an-image-it-keeps-deleting-them-Im-checking-with-the-Exifdata-website/answer/Tom-Robak-2tells me that I should add a code to my theme but anything helps!

Good luck with your journey!

Don't worry about iPhone pictures, they're good enough for web resolutions. Most people will check your blog on their phones or laptops with small screens (so ultra-high resolution is pointless). What's more, to keep your website loading fast you will insert images of (relatively) small sizes to your posts, or have a plugin like Smush make the pictures loading quickly.

Nowadays, you will find successful movies on festivals that were shot only with an iPhone. Some people win competitions with pictures from their phones... As long as you have an eye for making a good picture, it doesn't really matter what device you make it with.

Really nice writeup. I'm impressed by what you've done so far. Good luck with your journey!

Following. What monthly traffic are you aiming for?
My first goal is to hit $1,700 (my day job monthly salary) in less than a year. I expect at least 85k to reach that goal through ads only, but I would love to explore more how to incorporate affiliate income to reach that goal faster without needing to publish a shit ton of content

UPDATE #1

Sadly I am not posting as much as I would like but here I am to keep you updated.
I wrote a +3,000 words first article that took me a little more than I expected and then a long weekend in my country came and I traveled with some friends. After that, I was ready to come back and push at least 3 articles per week but I got a weird problem with my Wordpress site and I had to reinstall it which took me a long time and a couple of messages back and forth with my host.
Just in case someone went through something similar, here is what happened: I started to post my articles, and out of the sudden WP didn't allow me anymore to upload any picture
The server cannot process the image. This can happen if the server is busy or does not have enough resources to complete the task. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2560 pixels
It was super weird because I was trying to upload a 5mb 700*1000 picture so I contacted my host and they couldn't point 100% the error but they said that the server wasn't blocking this and there were plenty of resources but there were a compatibility issue with PHP 8.1 so a temporary workaround could be to set the PHP version to 7.4, which I did. I am using Generated Press with the Scribe template from the site library so I suspect the template is causing the error.

It all seems to work fine now so, so far, these are my stats:
  • Indexed posts: 1
  • Traffic: honestly, I am not even checking it at the moment

My goals for next week is to upload 3 more posts. I have a cluster of 30 keywords related to the same destination so the idea is to keep pushing this in order to have a solid interlink strategy and obtain some sort of authority on the topic.

My two main goals of the year is to generate a new income stream with this website and consistently going to the gym for the first time in my life to change my body (honestly anybody who looks at me will say that I am fine but I don't feel 100% comfortable with my body and I am tired of complaining without doing anything to change it). I am using an habit tracker to track my efforts so here is how its going:

Do you intend to share your post on social media to generate inorganic traffic or you only want to focus on organic traffic?

Do you intend to share your post on social media to generate inorganic traffic or you only want to focus on organic traffic?
Yes but not before I have at least +30 posts. Right now I need to focus on evergreen efforts, I only care about Google noticing me. The roadmap would look like this:

  1. Keep publishing until I have 30-50 posts and start seeing organic traffic (hopefully +20.000 pageviews for this amount of posts)
  2. Keep publishing but use some of the time to share the content on Facebook and Reddit (maybe Pinterest too? The thing here is that it would take a lot more time to create the pins)
  3. Really slow down publishing and focus on creating TikTok & Instagram accounts with new videos posted 4-5x times per week

By the time I hit #3 I should be earning enough to pay for 5-7 articles per month from a freelancer so I don't neglect the blog while I focus on my social strategy

Good that you started with something that you like (travel niche). Do not forget to build backlinks alongside the content creation. It will help you a lot to get your travel blog indexed and rank. Also keep in mind the advice about exif data by @dandan594594

My best wishes for your journey.

Following! Thinking of doing something similar.
Are you in Europe?

Good idea. Looking forward for your updates. Let's hope for the best. Good Luck
