Roughly two years ago I created a service where site owners has to include my JS-file to participate. As a result, I now have hundreds of sites with my JS-file included in their theme (mostly sidebars).

The question is, can I somehow take advantage of this?

I don't want to do something that might be illegal or harm my site's reputation. But maybe something in a grey area which will give me an advantage without harming the users or being easy to spot.

You could generate a link at the bottom of the website linking back to a site that might make you some money.

That's kind of shady don't you think? I wouldn't want someone to generate a link on my site without my permission.

well you can do that as long as you put "terms of use" and "copyright" notice..
if they don't like that then they should remove the code..
in other words, "if you want to use this script you shouldn't remove the copyrights notice, or we reserve the rights to change/remove/update the script whenever we want without giving a notice".. etc

Thanks guys. I'm not to keen about adding a link though since it would be obvious and most people would probably remove it.

Isn't there any more subtle thing I could do such as secretly fetching one of my sites and thereby increasing my visitors? It wouldn't result in any money but I would rank great on toplists for blogs and get trafic from these.

Pretty sure that's more grey then adding a non-visible link.

Frankly I'd go for the linkjuice rather than fetching your site with each page load.
