My IP Has Been Reported Everywhere For Spam.... NOW WHAT??

OK, OP, I'll stop busting your chops... several people have said to unplug the modem and it will reset the IP address; I too have AT&T and it is DSL and that takes less than a minute to reset if you do that.

Send 19.95 plus shipping and handling to Jericho so he has the cash to continue stalking his Ex-Wife... that is the least you can do for all the help here.

You can do the follow to get a new IP. Leave modem unplugged for 24 hours, Or get new router a new mac address will mean you will be issued a new Ip

Why do people keep giving advice about 'resetting your IP' if they don't understand the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses?!

Most cable providers don't offer dynamic IP addresses, so unplugging and resetting your modem won't 'reset' your IP address, this is called a STATIC IP ADDRESS. Most DSL providers will offer a Dynamic IP Address, so by resetting your modem, you're automatically given a new IP address out of a pool. However, that doesn't automatically grant you amnesty if you get caught doing something illegal... Your ISP has all of this information, and most keep it logged for records for 3-5 years.

In most cases, the only way you can get a new IP address if you have a Static IP would be to contact your ISP and would need a notably good reason.

Seriously, people need to stop giving advice they know little to nothing about. You're giving people incorrect information, regardless of if your intentions are good or not.

Because he has a dynamic IP as evident if you had read the thread. Not only does he say he has AT&T (which is DSL and dynamic in every instance I've seen) but also in a later post the customer service person told him that they could give him a static IP if he wanted to talk to billing (pay for it) when he asked them to assign him an IP which further backs up the fact that his IP is dynamic currently.

Therefore, assuming they banned just his IP and not the whole range, he can easily reset it by unplugging so that's the easiest/first thing he ought to try.

But from what I saw, he was looking for ways to avoid getting into future trouble with his ISP, not finding other ways to spam said blog again and trying to find ways to evade his ban. Changing his IP (if he was on a Dynamic IP) wouldn't reduce his chances of getting into any trouble with his ISP, if anything, it would increase them as he could be hitting the same blog multiple times with his own IP address, and they would just continue reporting it.

These dynamic addresses aren't one-use-and-then-forgotten... the ISP keeps all of these addresses on file, for reasons like this where somebody might feel the need to report it for spam, etc.


And no, I wasn't being a dick. AT&T offers Dynamic and Static IP addresses, and he didn't state once in this entire thread which he had. So there wasn't anything obvious, or apparent from what he told us. He said that they could give him a Static IP address, meaning he COULD be on a Dynamic IP address currently, or that they were offering ANOTHER Static IP address. A lot of these people giving advice, were only doing so because they have Dynamic IP addresses themselves, and think they understand how this whole thing works. The point of my reply was to let them know that they're incorrect, and that they shouldn't be giving people advice when they don't know exactly what they're talking about. Simple.
