First off, I want to just share a little about my IM journey. I have failed with it. I have failed with it greatly. I have started many ventures and quit on them. I have made a few dollars here and there, sure... but nothing substantial. Amazon FBA, Fiverr, site flipping, Instagram, Youtube, PPC, adsense (banned, lol)... these are just a few of the things I've given a go with minimal success.

This will be different, however. I am creating this thread to hold myself accountable and to make sure the forums can see when I've been lazy and when I've worked my tail off.

I will try and update daily, every other day at the worst. My full-time job is a teacher, and I love the kids and the opportunities to impact young lives that my job provides, but the pay... well, we all know teachers don't enter the profession for the pay. Being a teacher, I have nothing but time on my hands since it's summertime and we are on break. I figured I'd use this time to be productive instead of pathetic.

Anyways, I am using the Clickbank and blog posting method provided by Meathead. I will be using my education (degree in writing) to write product reviews, and will start by posting comments on blogs myself before outsourcing, just to learn what works and doesn't.

I won't write my initial to-do-list as a bunch of things I want done TODAY... because I don't know what sorts of road blocks I will run into... instead, I will aim to have this stuff checked off within the next 48 hours:

    • Buy a domain and get it hosted (done)
    • Pick 3-5 CB products to promote (done)
    • Set up review website
    • Write reviews for CB products
    • Spend 30-60 minutes commenting and promoting

I will update at the end of the day and let everyone know of my progress. Hoping to at least have some reviews written by day's end.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1

You have a skill most IM-ers lack - writing HQ content (I assume English is your primary language). If I were you, I would master keyword research first and then build SEO-optimized websites. The investment should be pretty minimal because you are writing the articles yourself and you can start ranking long tail keywords first without spending a dime on backlinks and move on later by investing to rank further more difficult keywords.

Thanks for the advice. In my failures, I have gained knowledge (isn't that the point of the ride?)... I do know a bit about integrating keywords into your articles effectively. I have already gotten one article done using some techniques I know. I've also got my website up and running and gotten a mailchimp account set up to build a list. I am getting ready to work on my second article after a brief break for lunch, but I can see having 4 or so reviews written by the end of the day so that I can start the commenting first thing tomorrow. Haven't hit many roadblocks so far and things are going smoothly.

Well, the day is done and so am I...

    My checklist in my OP...

    • Buy a domain and get it hosted (done)
    • Pick 3-5 CB products to promote (done)
    • Set up review website (DONE)
    • Write reviews for CB products (DONE)
    • Spend 30-60 minutes commenting and promoting

I was able to get my site completely set up and clean looking. I wrote 3 product reviews. I probably could have done more, but it was a beautiful day and I wanted to go enjoy it a bit... plus writing 500+ word reviews gets boring. I will add more products as I go along, I'm sure.

I also set up a mailchimp account and integrated it into my site. I have a pop for when you first visit (delayed 5 seconds), and an opt in widget in the sidebar. Good to go. Tomorrow I make an attempt to drive traffic!

There's this thing people do, that sounds like what you might be doing and I'd recommend against it (but I don't know you're doing it, it just sounds like it).

So if you're doing product reviews on clickbank products, do you mean that you are finding specific products on clickbank, and then SEOing for that product name + review? For instance, one of the products is "Ted's Woodworking Plans" ... I would advise against trying to SEO for "Ted's Woodworking Plans review".

There are a few reasons for this. First of all, the keyword search traffic for that type of thing is going to be virtually nonexistent. Second, that is what everyone else is doing ... so you're competing against many other people trying to promote the exact same thing in the same way. Third, if someone is specifically looking for that exact product review, they know what they're looking for and will click the first result, not "shopping around" for more info.

Instead, what you want to do is rank for broad categories which the clickbank product would fulfill the need for. Instead of ranking for "Ted's Woodworking Plans review", you'll research for gazebo plans, outdoor furniture diagrams, patio furniture plans, etc ... and you build your website chasing after all these keywords (after you've done keyword research and know that there are thousands of people searching for those keywords) ... and then, since that clickbank deal meets the need that they're looking for -- your page sells them on the need to buy it.

That will give you a much better chance for success ... IMO trying to rank for specific products is a wasted effort, you should rank for broad categories which the product you're selling fulfills, then sell them on that product on your page. You'll still get specific product longtail traffic anyways.

Good luck, hope you make it through your journey.

This project is on my to do list. Could you please elaborate on how you find places to post. Are you going to be posting on blogs, forums?

thats what I'm attacking today. I will update once I've spent a few hours commenting.

this is a great post and I appreciate it. No I am not doing what you advised against because I had the same thought process. However, I am not doing enough of what you encouraged and I see why it would be effective. Thanks for the advice.

For the record, I am not looking to rank for keywords... I expect blog commenting to be my main source of traffic... But organic traffic in the future would obviously be golden. Great post and you gave me some ideas on how to attack the commenting. Thanks!

I plan on doing a little of everything to see how it works!

I found this thread just looking around BHW, and was wondering how things are going. I'm taking in a lot of info and I'm interested in seeing how the different tactics are working for people.
