Yeah sounds like its down to its last days to be honest, if you hear any noises, especially clicking sounds then its on the brink and will need replacing.

Try to backup as much as you can, replace the drive, re-install the operating system, restore the backed up data and then you'll be fine. You'll also have a faster experience as it will be a clean install.

Yes, get rid. If I was you I'd shut it down now and let it rest before it goes too far and you lose all your data. At least if it's still spinning you can still read from it, so if all else fails you can slave it and copy over your files and folders.

You could run a defrag and a chkdsk and check for bad sectors, but from what you're saying it looks like it could go at any minute.

Definitely get rid of it. Maybe to be safe try taking it to a data recovery place so they can give you a backup of the contents of the drive before it dies.

Yeah when a drive starts to make those sorts of noises it is only a matter of time. Try to back up as much as you can. Sometimes you can fix the problem but you are better off not wasting your time. Professional recovery services could probably rescue some of your data but they cost an arm and a leg.

Get an SSD mate. Once you get one you'll never use a mechanical hard drive again :)

Ranko, if you can make some backup at first, then here's my story: I'm already 5+ months on a hdd that has the same issues like yours. Here's a quick fix (that may work or not for your hdd). Place the hdd in a sealed plastic bag, have it in your freezer for about 10 mins, take it out, wait 1 min and install it in your comp, turn on. It could be fixed at least for a time.

I'm not at the first recovery of this type, only about 1 in like 7 cases didn't work or even worsen the situation.

My HDD was doing the same noises, it burned some days later, replace it, of course it's not sure it will burn, but most probably it will after some time.

Actually HDD making sounds is a good thing, it alerts you that its days in this life is over and asks you to make backup ASAP

Slave the drive and then use XXClone to copy the old drive to the new one. Not just "files and folders," either. Everything will stay installed and work as soon as the process is complete, provided you do it before the old drive dies. The computer will act as though it still has the old drive, minus crunching and clicking. No reinstalling Windows or anything else. Once you use XXClone, it'll be your first resort from then on.

Bonus: The version of XXClone that does that is legitimately free. Look for XXClone Freeware on their download page. (A paid version is available for incremental backups.)

The last time that happened to me, about two minutes later I got the black screen of death. The freezer idea sounds interesting I never heard of that.

What works better than the freezer is the cold packs you put in the freezer. When you get ready to clone the drive which is mostly likely running hot as hell if it's got mechanical damage, just set it on a cold pack and put one on top of it. Use a rubber band to keep them in place and clone asap. That will keep the drive cool and hopefully long enough to get that data off there. They heat up quick when they go bad so just freezing them doesn't work well. Once they start working they'll heat up quick. You need the continuous cold on there to keep them from seizing.

Good luck, oh and don't try any drive repair utilities. If you have weird noises you have mechanical damage and running it longer than absolutely necessary is not wise and those utilities can't fix mechanical damage.

hmm im suspecting it might have been a bad torrent causing the issue cos i had problems and then on every boot it would do a scandisk till i sorted that. the torrent would say 'bad checksum' or something and was red. then i deleted that. but i was eager to get this porn so i started downloading agian and the issues arose again. but i deleted the pron agian earlier and it hasnt done it agian so ill wait and see if that stops it now. i think it was cocking up when utorrent would try and hash the file and it wasnt what it was spose to be or something.

If you can make a Zenno template then you'll have the know how to get your money back on a new computer in no time. I mean how much does a top wack Dell cost these days? Not to mention you will be able to watch your favourite lesbians doing their thing in colour.
