    Hi Bhw experts,
My friend is a tailor. He manages his shop with not much office space. He just manages to make ends meet. Getting customers hasn't been the problem. He gets huge number of orders daily. His inventory includes 2 sewing machine and few essentials. Is there any additional opportunity available for him via online? Is there any way to upscale his profits?
    Thanks in advance.

well he could do a custom service, i don't know much about tailoring. People could send in orders for custom garments to be made to measure or he could team up with local fashion designers and offer a service for them. Does he have a fashion college nearby to offer a service?

If he don't have a website, that's a good start to get, online presence is essential these days social media is also a good way to go.

    I am eagerly waiting mate.

We live in a small town in India. I dont think, there would be any fashion designer(low count) not having enough tailors(high count) in my small town. But I would look for ways along those lines.

Thanks for the tip mate. But again, what up selling service is possible for him to go online?

    I found this when I Google'd

    https://joshkaufman.net/indochino/

They seems to be selling and shipping custom suits to people that orders online, that's something that could broaden your friends customer area, especially if he goes abroad.

Its an idea, and if I were you I would ask on quora.com too, you can get alot of answer's from that sites and ideas about everything more or less :)

I don't know your country but in general if he is getting huge number of orders daily then he must be making very good money.

If he gets huge number of orders daily then there won't be any time left to do anything else.

He can run online classes and teach students via video and/or live cam chat. Or just create youtube tailoring channel and make money with adsense.

If getting customers is not a problem, and his hangup is handling the influx of orders coming in, how is he going to have time to handle additional orders coming in from the Internet, or anything else relating to the Internet at this point?

What he needs to do is hire two people to handle the tailoring for him, so he can spend his time focusing on expansion.

The rates aren't much. Moreover, the overhead is pretty expensive too. If some better paying order comes his way, it would make life easy.

He can delay some orders by informing clients and prioritize high paying ones better. He already has two people working for him by shift basis.

    I don't understand.

It is probably time he hired some staff to assist him.

The internet is not going to help him at this point unless he uses it to source cheaper materials.

He gets 2-3 for a pant or shirt. It takes 30-45 minutes to finish one. I am sure, there must be better earning methods with those skills.

For him to take advantage of the internet then he will have to scale his business to meet demand.

Bespoke tailoring requires exact measurements, how is he going to take those measurements from people he will never meet?

There are things he can do online but his business doesn't really sound ready.

Start with the basics first and get him to start/buy a website that showcases his work and allows people to place orders.

I agree with others that it doesn't really sound like he needs to go online. He is already doing fine offline. If he is already booked with orders, he will not have time to do anything extra online.

To expand, he could hire a team of upcoming designers in India and sewers and have them run the offline business while he does the online business.

I am unsure about what typical rates are for tailors in India, but perhaps he should look at increasing the amount he is charging for tailoring (increasing his margins). If he has a good service which it sounds like, he probably has himself established in the area and has credibility. However, one thing to consider with this also is how price sensitive people are to prices you don't want to price the product too high and make yourself noncompetitive.

Tell him to increase his rates; that should do the trick ;)

In my country there is a girl who makes dogs clothes and sells it on etsy, what she sells for " CA$37.18 " could be bought on our city market for 1-4$CA...

    So i suggest you:
    1. if you have that amount of orders, well, you are doing something wrong :D
in that case, up the prices in your country, and think of some upsell method
    2. hire one more tailor, let him focus on India, - take the percentage of his earnings
    3. while you focus on the internet

He should sell something on the internet he can easily do just like the example above. Dogs clothes should be easy since it is small. Create one sample product for photos. He should only make one if there is an order. Low risk.

In my country there is a girl who sell's dog clothes on etsy, for 30+$, and you can find stuff like that on our city market for $1/5$... She makes good money...
In my opinion, if he has that many sales, then he is doing something wrong :D
Hire one more tailor and that the percentage of what he earns, and focus on etsy and... Setup a website, make 10+ posts about tailoring, post some images, your work and so on, make some lessions ( teachable.com ) and connect etsy, these lessions, posts about tailoring with your website... I advise you to also write something about indian clothes, styles and stuff.
