    hi guys,
I discovered this site while trying to optimize my own business site. I have enjoyed SEO soooo much. I enjoy the creativity that it takes and the trial and error. I like it more than my real job.
well, couple of days ago I posted an ad on craigslist for seo services (as a joke). I never thought anybody would contact me, given the 100s of other people offering the same service. then today this guy contacted me!
But I feel so nervous because I feel like I dont know how to handle clients.

    here are my questions:
how do you handle fees? do you charge monthly? do you get paid ONLY if the client's site goes higher in the search results?

what about writing articles? who writes those, you or the client? I told the client to write some articles and we can post them to article sites, but now I feel like that's my job, no?
Do you get paid for writing these articles?
how much am I supposed to charge?
what do you do when the client's site is so terrible that you have to basically rewrite the whole site to make it search engine friendly? this guy's site is basically a picture, no text. it has been indexed by google but it does not appear in the first 100000 results for his keywords!

Be careful, don't do free SEO before you get a upfront payment.

You can tell the guy that you want an advance payment as a fee for his website SEO audit. Don't move a finger until the guy fork over a few bucks :)

It is better to be prepared for an opportunity then to have an opportunity come by and not be prepared,

Daniel Sun, you need to get your ducks in a row for your next prospect, as this one is probably going to screw you by milking you for info. Get an agreement together and get paid based on performance. Page 3 = 200 per month. Page 2 is 250.00 and page 1 is 500.00 based on specific targeted keywords.

You can suggest hip to post a project for you in a freelancing website that have escrow (scriptlance or odesk ...) and as tgarmon said ask him to pay you based on performance (depend on the keyword) .
About the articles you can ask for additional fees .
BTW i wish i have that luck when joking :D

that would be why I don't do SEO for customers - although I'm sitting on 1-5 on G for (my town)searchengineoptimisation.com. Thats just to piss off the other guys doing it in my town.

Ask for payment for your initial work upfront. Then give them the rates per month afterwards on the selected keywords reaching to page 1 and 2

When I asked for SEO work, people always asked me for a base fee which will cover the first month + initial fee (say $500) and then ask for a recurring monthly $200.

In regards to your customers website. If he doesn't have enough content, you should get him to work on his content first. Only he knows what he wants his site to be. You could be a good guy and help him out a little I guess but you're not a writer and that shouldn't be your job.
