    Hey all,

I'm quite new to link building and seo in general but im making my first REAL attempt to rank for a keyword that has a decent amount of traffic. So, im going to make my own first linkwheel to test the waters, its going to a basic one with 6 spokes, the 6 spokes I was going to use were:

1 - Wordpress blog (free version platform)
    2 - Squidoo
    3 - Ezine Article
    4 - Weebly
    5 - Goarticles
    6 - Vox

    My plan was to link each property to my main money site and then also to next property. Just a couple questions;

1 - Are these a good choice of properties to use?
2 - Shall I keep the anchor text to my niche site the same for each property?

    Thanks guys

    Hi Homenet,

Your second question i would say yes to. - Keep the text and property the same.

Not certain whether they are the best things for building your link wheel but i tell you what, each time you create one, you shall learn something new and hopefully improve on the results each time, so i suggest you go ahead exactly with you plan above and best of luck to you

Let us know how it goes

Thanks for the reply, after reading a bit more I think you are right and the 2 article sites arent really going to be suitable for this, so I am going to replace those with Blogsome and LiveJournal. I will be making the accounts today and adding the content and the links tonight, I will then ping each one and submit all the rss feeds. My plan tomorow is to then social bookmark each property (still looking for a good way to automate or at least speed up the social bookmarking, using social marker is about as good as i've got so far but even that is buggy and slow)

I will keep this thread updated with when my properties get indexed and how my ranking is effected.

Right my link wheel is all done, 6 spokes all linked together and then to my main niche site. I hand wrote all the content for it (which was tricky since the niche isnt something i know a lot about, luckily im an expert at bullshitting :D )

I have then submitted all my feeds to many rss directories and also pinged the main pages.

I will now wait till then indexed and keep everyone updated on how it affects my ranking of my main site.

    Sounds good homenet,

I am about to experiment with link wheels too, but have been caught up on finding a good article spinner, as if you want to automate this for multiple sites, you need speed. Likewise i will need to learn all about rss, social bookmarks and pinging ...

I wonder how old this technique is now since all non techies are trying it too. Hope it holds up for a while.

Yeh likewise, I did hear some time ago that google were catching on to it, but I think its probably because of all the spam link wheels, the way I see it, is that as long as your content is good and unique then you shouldnt have much to worry about. Thats the only other thing that worries me about using article spinners, sure the content comes out unique but it usually ends up unreadable or not making sense. But like you say, if you want to make lots of these link wheels then speed is an issue.

and the other thing, is how often do you update each linkwheel? Do you do this at the expense of submitting your articles to article sub sites (assuming your article sites arent also part of your wheel).

Seems like people usually build a single page then just rss feed and ping the hell out of everything. I thought that the social sites needed to be updated like a blog, still learning though ... so much dis information on the web, lucky we are in here ;)

Very good question, my understanding is that you dont update them but just keep expanding to the link wheel?

Not sure really, like you say, so much info out there!

Just a quick update: ALL of my 6 web 2.0 properties are now indexed, I am in the process of social bookmarking all of them through about 10 different bookmark sites, I am spreading out the bookmarking though and will stagger it over a few days. I am also going to writing an article for each property with a backlink to it, will then submit those to ezine.

Currently I am ranked 260th in google for my keyword on my money site. The site has been online for just around a week and a half so still early days!

    Will keep everyone updated :)

Just an update; 5 days later and im now ranking 181st in google for my keyword, its quite a big jump but still nowhere near the top 10.

Whether this is because of the link wheel or the other link building i've done im not sure.

Ya I'd love to see if your link wheel works for you, I'm thinking about maybe doing it for my website too!

There's lots of opinions these days on whether you should close the link wheel (or not).

I personally find "open" layouts to work better these days than traditional hub-and-spoke "closed" wheels. My advice is to mix it up and design a murky backlink strategy that isn't so easy to identify.

Check out my tool that automates this for you (its free during the beta we just launched).

You can see it in action in a video on our site here:

    I hope this helps!

    Another update:

16 days since my linkwheel, I have been doing additionally backlinking (articles + blog comments) and I am now position 73 for my main keyword, a big jump from 181.

Going for the #1 spot, a couple more weeks and im hoping to be there :)

How many money site backlinks do you have except the linkwheels?

    What is your competition?

So far around 800 backlinks and growing, site is pr2 at the moment.

keyword in quotes = 560,000 results
    intitle: 44,200
    inurl: 17,900

When searching for intitle and inurl should you use quotes? i.e intitle:"keyword goes here"

it depends. I use quotes if when I want to have a look at the potentially optimized websites for the same key phrase.
