This a story of my first attempt at seo.

A month ago i started my site. In a week it was ranking on page 4 of serps, then it suddenly disappeared from the results. A few days ago my site came back in the results, but now 2 posts from my homepage are dancing between pages 5,6,7 and my homepage is ranked somewhere at the range of page 40+.

I am wondering why are my posts ranking better than my homepage, is this normal, should i just wait for my homepage to raise in ranking, or should i do something?

And also, the webmaster tools says that my average position for my keyword is 39.

Any clues what are the possible reasons for this? My best guesses are (from one month of my seo experience, lol):
1.over optimization of my homepage ? I just checked my keyword density for my main keyword and it is 2.5% - that is not much, I think

2.due to my inexperience when I started I used to build most of my backlinks with the same anchor text ? I am diversifying now

3.I heard that having affiliate links can influence rankings ? I have 1 affiliate link per post - max 2, and all have the nofollow tag ? there are on ads on the site ? all the content on the site is unique, written by me

I am reluctant to do any significant changes to the site because I am not sure if anything is wrong ? maybe this is normal for newer sites?

The keyword I am targeting has 6000 exact monthly searches, and has low to medium competition, this is my first attempt at seo, and my goal is to get to page one just to see I can do it! I really don't want to start another project before I have a basic understanding of how this works, and it's a great confidence boost to have a success, so I am sticking with this site!

with new sites yu need to add content regularly and build some quality links to overcome the dance.
if your niche is medium-high competitive you will need to wait sometime till your site gets aged and gain some authority before judging your seo plans

Wait a week to see the results. Don't build spammy backlinks on it, quality over quantity.

Your sub pages are ranking better because they are more relevant. People get caught up in link building sometimes and forget about what's most important to Google: relevance.

Niche competiton is low to medium, and the number one site in serps is only 4 months old, and doesnt have a lot of content, 7 or 8 brief posts under 500 words, and a few backlinks (a 150 according to SEO Spyglass). Site number 2 is a popular forum thread, and below that are youtube videos...
