Quick rant about my project about self balancing scooters. Maybe someone can learn from my experience for similar projects in the future.

I moved into other country where the ''hoverboards'' trend had not hit in yet.

As I saw how it was popular in United States And In Europe I thought it would be popular here too.

So I thought of ways for how I would promote it.

    I came up with:

-Set up a website for it and rank for SEO (No competition keywords)
-Cruise around city with a hoodie where is my website's name on the back. Ask people if they want to try the hoverboard and either sell one from my car on the spot for cheaper or give a discount coupon.
-Hire my friends for promotion work with a hoverboard and personal discount coupons for comission.
-Put my website's logos into the boards.
-Set up fb and IG accounts and promote them with a free give away.

I was happy with the plan so I went to look for a seller. I liked alibaba and dhgate. I ended up ordering 2 test pieces from dhgate from gold seller and 97% good ratings.

One of the hoverboards weren't working and that got me bit unsure about the future models. If I would set a pre-order option and get 100 orders and 30% of them would have something wrong with them I would be screwed.

I had a chat with the seller and he wanted me to send videos of the hoverboard problem and another one where I tried he's way of fixing it. He didn't answer anymore and the refund option closed.

I thought that I have to change my strategy. Instead of me selling these hoverboards I could just sell the visitors for my competitiors after ranking. (Another option was to sell covers for the hoverboards as they get scratches very easily).

I read a good amount of SEO and created articles and web 2.0s and today I managed to burn all the web 2.0s. It was my first try with SEO so I'm happy to know what to not do next time.

So now I have two hoverboards. One working which I barely use and one broken which I can't figure out what to do with. The website is worthless now as well.

    What did I learn?

When ordering something check when the refund option closes and set up a last day notice on your calendar.

Never order in bulk. Always get the test units first.

    Couple things about SEO.

Not the best plan to start with tbh. You were going to try and be a door to door hover board salesman? No need to bulk order something that expensive just droppship

Edit: sounds like with a few tweaks you could have a pretty successful business plan though

I don't find this a failure... Just find another provider and keep doing your plan. I lost big money buying non working videogame consoles to sell on eBay. I didn't failed, I just changed my niche and now I'm earning.

I couldn't dropship. Price would have been same as my competitors.

I contacted many sellers and managed to get a following deal:

100 units with 8 week shipping = $140 per unit.

100 units with 3 week shipping = $200 per unit.

Cheapest ones till today that I see others selling are minimum of $299.

Also the part of cruising around the city with a hoverboard would have been a lot of fun. Got to get outside from time to time mate.

It's starting to be a bit too late for the season. I'm not sure how fast I could rank the next hoverboard site. Will move to my other projects from here.

Yes that's right. You never know which opportunity is the right one.

The plan is good. so dont give up on it.
All offline businesses get faulty goods and suffer from theft.
You need to build this into your margins.
Also you should consider what taxes you may have to pay.

Normally on a product like this You need to charge at least 3 times your costs.
Unless you have a very reliable supplier.

Now if your the only seller in your country, You have a huge advantage for a while. Once the big box shops
catch on to it they will cut the price and put you out of business. So make sure you don't have too much stock.

Take the time to find a reliable seller and let him dropship for you. There are lots of countries that alibaba does free dropshipping to. If your country is one of them This is a huge help

I used to sell products online, ALWAYS order test units. I never had a problem with ordering bulk and having them being broken. I also set a reminder to tell me when the purchase protection is about to run out. BTW, are you planning on continuing the project?

@lol to guys saying this is a good plan or anything closely related.

@OP being a door to door hoverboard salesman + hitting web 2.0s to rank ? I don't know where to start. You know that guys which never start because they want all perfect etc etc? Or the ones who just keep doing small tests? Well, that's not the case. You've got a long road ahead. Business plans usually are 5k to 50k words long..

Taxes and alv% + custom wasnt too bad. 45$. So i would have made 50-100$ depending from the shipping.

I didnt buy traffic as i wouldnt have benefit from it. I would have needed to set up ssl and payment option for the bank on the country which cost 150$. Plus I didnt have the products. Also if the SEO would have worked i could have always sold the traffic.

I don't get the hate here. Sounds like op had a good idea to move a product in a non saturated area. Also realised money could be made while having fun. Probably the best way to start out really. So what if it's door to door? If it could potentially provide a profit op is happy with who cares?

Not sure why one of my straregies sounds so weird to people. Dont want to prove myself, but ill add this for the reasons why i wanted to do this on the streets.

My city is quite small. I was going to be targeting placed with "parties" and busy streets. I had one of these boards with me once last month when there was a famous singer on the streets. I drived it a bit and I was talking with people non stop. Its like a social magnet like i assumed.

Also the fact that ill be giving cards with website name where is a video and photo of me adds trustworthy.

I would had spend 2-3 hours a day on the street not as full time job. I like social life as well.

What comes to the SEO part. Everybody starts from somewhere. If you feel like i dont have a clue when i talk about web 2.0s then feel free to give a hint. If your first time with SEO was a success, then im truly happy for you.

That's not really a failure. You got scammed. I second the advice from others: do dropshipping.
