My experience with oDesk and outsourcing has been horrible!

    Here's my rant of oDesk.

I've been using oDesk for the past ~5 months and the quality of people that are on that site is horrible.

If you haven't used it before, there's a way to create "qualifications." For every job I create, I make it as strict as I can especially the "English" option.

When interviewing all the prospects, they all sound great. They all have 1,000+ hours logged, great ratings, a nice portfolio, etc...

However, they all say "YES - I CAN DO THAT."

I'll hire someone only to find that they either:

    1. Just disappear (I don't lose money)
    2. 2-3 days goes by - "Sorry Sir but I can't do this. Good luck."
    3. "I fixed it for you" - but it looks/does nothing of what I want
    4. Say they want more money

It's extremely frustrating however I only have a few modifications left that require a programmer.

I'd much rather hire someone from BHW than dealing with this nonsense.

FYI - I'm sure the site is great for regular css/html but definitely stay away if you need quality coding. At least that's my experience.

What other sites have members used? Besides oDesk and Elance?

I've used them all with varying degrees of success. There are great freelancers on Odesk, Guru, and Freelancer - but the issue, as you've seen, is weeding through the junk to find them.

Your hiring process has to be detailed and lengthy. Forward project briefs and questionnaires, get answers to preliminary questions up front, and always check references. If they don't have verifiable references, just pass. It's a bit more time consuming to operate this way but it will save you time and aggravation in the end.

I have had similar problems recently on Odesk. I also posted bad feedback for someone and it never appeared on that person's profile so I'm assuming they also filter bad feedback. I will not be using Odesk any longer for that reason alone. Shady...

7878 is right about Odesk ... put them through a rigorous application process and ask a lot of questions. The test odesk offers developers to take are actually pretty decent at determining a developers talent, but not work ethic. Once you find a good dev on Odesk, book him solid. My success ratio is about 1 out of every 5 I hire are keepers.

If you use oDesk - Give up. It's not gonna be anything.
If you can actually find good freelancers there - It's basically an internet heaven.

I feel your frustration, mate. My story is the opposite way round, but also annoying is f*ck. A waste of time so far:

I got hired within an HOUR of joining to do a job in which I had not listed any skill set for: A "PA".

So I message the guy ( there was no interview! ) and said "I'm sorry but I'm a musician not a PA, there is no description of what your looking for so I don't know if I can even help you. " he then said that as I had video / audio skills listed, he'd like me to do daily Youtube videos about his business. Featuring myself talking to the camera. Oh, and with a HD camera at that! (?!?!) I replied " I'm not confident speaking in front of a camera, and I want to work for myself, not promote others business. " What would I even talk about every day? A video per day, he wanted a couple of hours logged a day too.

After frustratingly messaging back and forth, I just left the contract, rather pissed off that he had already fucked up my reputation on Odesk within hours. I'm sure leaving a job before finishing looks bad.

Secondly, I got interviewed to do music on a game. ( never hired, it was all under the radar ) It was all so exciting. The game was in process, everthing was looking fantastic and I had never felt so excited about a project. Then after a month the guy went AWOL for 5 weeks. Completely unprofessional and I was devastated. He then messaged me saying " Sorry I was ill. " ( I never replied as I was thinking how I felt about this...) then the next day I got "Sorry I was away, I had a family emergency " - Obviously forgetting he had already sent the message the day before! lol

People are unreliable everywhere I guess but I had one frustrating and another confidence smashing experience within my first week and haven't returned as of yet.

PS: I realise I shouldn't have worked for the Game creator without being hired / protected by oDesk, but he DID get me and the others to sign a contract, so I assumed I was protected. Now I don't have the energy to pursue lost revenue as in the end, it taught me an important lesson.

Are you kidding me? This just happened to me on oDesk.

What's worse is that I paid him half of the amount! This dude says he will refund but he need to be compensated.

I am like, wait a minute dude. You wasted my freakin' time and now you want some money for working less that a day? I took more time to explain you about the whole project.

This dude took 5 days to complete less that a day's work.

My first experience with oDesk is horrible, but the support is awesome!

Is this possible? I definitely want to give this dude a bad reputation.

I've had good success on odesk. I just dont hire anyone. i picked through with people with good qualifications and then interview them via skype.

On skype i ask them detailed questions on their plans to fix bugs or develop what I need done. They do the job, but a lot of times not the way i want it. So it isnt perfect. Also, i might have had success b/c the jobs i tend to hire for are bugs...

I assumed it showed on your work list that you had left an unfinished job. Maybe not? I hope not! lol

I have a great expirience in both working and searching for workers on Elance.

This is what may be a winning combo

Small Admin jobs- E. Europe freelancers (
Writing- USA and UK freelancers, females mostly. Just because someone is from USA/UK it does not mean he/she writes good but a couple of samples is more than enough to see what kind of skils they have. Don't expect uber quality for $1/100 words, try to find a keepr and offer at least $2/100 words.
Design and 3D- Europe (mostly Eastern). Use fresh freelancers with no feedback but with good portfolio, they will do magic just to get their first feedback and 5 star rating.
Big Admin jobs- Indian Freelancers- Must explain everything till the smallest detail, don't expect them to read your mind. A hint- If they use "Please sir" a lot in their proposal, forget about it, they are probably not a good fit.

omg dude, this sounds exactly like my experience. I have been trying to find a good seo for a while so I can outsource some of my work, but they are all retarded there.

this one time i was foolish enough to assume the guy was doing the job....I waited one month, thinking "this is being taken care of, great" then after a month, i contact the guy, and he says "sorry sir I cant do this"

now if it's a repetitive job (like creating accounts) I always give them a test (create two accounts for free)
usually the ones who are retarded will disappear at this stage, so that filters a little bit.
or they will do it, but totally ignoring all your directions, they will do it how they feel it should be done, not how you asked. so that's more filtering.
another thing you can do is ask for daily reports. if they dont report back one day, they are fired.

I'm not even going to bother due to the site's design.
