Well, those are the steps you have to complete.. If you have already done everything, you still won't see a change in "site:mydomain.com" search in at least a few days because Google doesn't instantly update your site settings :) It will take time but from this moment on Google will only update your site with WWW or without (depends on your settings)

Thanks for the help. I already checked mark to index my www version only so hope it will work as I did this first time. One last question, Can I redirect 301 to my site?

If you want to redirect users from www.mydomain.com to mydomain.com you should use a 301 redirect (usually it's possible from your web hosting control panel). If you want to redirect users to a whole different site you might get a hit in your search engine rankings or in some cases totally deindexed (if the site you are redirecting to has very different content).

Rel Canonical shows your preferred version of the page. It goes right in the <head>

If the website is new then you need to wait as Google is having some bug or something. For every new website I am making, Google caches both the root domain and www. link even during the presence of proper canonical tag referring to www version. It corrects itself after 7-10 days.

You should also use 301 redirect from your cpanel because other search engines like Yahoo and Bing will still crawl WWW and non-WWW versions. :) After that you are all set up!
