I'm doing some research at the moment and have found some niches/keywords.

When looking at competitor's backlinks how many do you think is too many to bother with?

Let's say someone has a site with 200 backlinks all PR 10

Then someone else has a site with 1000 backlinks most of which are PR 1 or below..

What are your thoughts? How many backlinks is too many to bother trying to compete with? What's the sweet spot?

If you gain a legitimate keyword anchor text link from just 1 PR10 page you will you rank better than 10,000 PR1 links.

Good luck in finding PR10 links.

First backlinks are not the only factor to outrank your competitor. But, backlinks also a factor.
It depends on where your links comes from. Research how trust-able your competitor is and how old the site is and whats the PR of your competitor. Analyse there backlinks.
