    Hey there,

I have a keyword that i used to write an article for a page. However i have the keyword as a category as well.
    For example:

    Website/category/keyword1 and website/keyword

How come my category ranks instead of the keyword?
Is it because the category has multiple articles or is the description that i have written for the category better then the article itself?
How do i transfer this to my page as the category currently ranks on rank 12 but it is mostly a filler category description.

Should i just improve the category description and add images or try to rank the page itself?

    Thanks in advance

    Regards,

    DTjai

Categories are favored by the current algo. If the keyword has "category intent" then it is going to be hard to rank a product page... For example... if you look at the organic results for "Gift Baskets" they are mostly websites about Gift Baskets or category pages of gift baskets. So if google decides the keyword has category intent then categories are go to rank best for the keyword. Trying to force a product page against the algo's will is going to be very difficult... For each keyword you target you should check what types of pages are ranking well and target a similar page type on your site for that keyword.

Sometime categories and blog posts about a category can coexist but that has to be a very well tuned post to pull it off.

This information seems to indicate OP should be comfortable with the ranking as it is based on the new algorithms? So it's OK for the category page to outrank the actual article?

This throws a wrench in my thinking obviously as it suggests someone might want to build backlinks to a category page. I can't imagine that is a linear thought process on my part.

Hoping for continued insights. Great question OP, and thanks for this answer validseo.

I build backlinks to my category pages as well as monetize them.

Most of the time, but not always, I also have a fair amount of unique content that is specific to the category itself as well on the page as they rank and get targeted traffic.

It is not always the highest and best use of the category page but does work well in a lot of the niches I play around in.

It really depends on what the keyword is... When you pick a keyword to target you should investigate the types of pages that rank well for it then choose one of those page types to compete. If I tried to target my "Mini-Minion Balloon Gift Basket" product page for the keyword "Gift Baskets" I would have a very hard time ranking. But when I target my Gift Basket category page with the search term it ranks fairly easily.

The other thing I've noticed is that some retail categories correlate social signals strongly and others don't. I think it might have to do with how crowded a keyword is with known affiliate offers. When you change the query to "Best Gift Baskets" this also seems to trigger social and ratings as stronger factors. Maybe rank brain at play?

It is kind of a weird concept for a blog, but if you use categories especially in your URL you are sending a signal to google that you want to be indexed by category. So I think a combination of the OP's keyword choices and site architecture is leading Google down that path.

But I am just guessing based on my experience with category issues selling products in online stores.

Another thing that might be happening is if the OP only has backlinks to the home page then category pages might be getting better link juice than the leaf node articles for being closer to the home page. Site architecture and silo-ing might be coming into play here too.

Wordpress if that is what you are using has a simple heirachy

Homepage, Page, Category Page, Article There's nothing wrong with that. You could take advantage of it and start ranking for longer tail keywords for your articles.

As Markantos said.. you can use it to your advantage by ranking for long tail keywords if you are using silo structure in your website..
