Since I am representing a lot of customers I spend several thousand dollars every month in our BST section. These are some simple tips for the BST sellers.
1) Ordering should be fast and easy. If you can't even have a simple wufoo form don't expect a lot of business. That is an obvious amateur sign. It also means you like shortcuts and don't like bothering with the details.
2) I am a mature male and I feel pretty interesting while ordering 'The Powerpuff Girls Mega Shield lll' package with all the childish images around. It is not a kindergarten. Stop investing time and money in those fancy designs and spend that time improving the quality of your service.
3) Clearly identify your targeted audience. If you are looking for serious IM'ers don't try to sell talking about revolutionary wiki links that will get you to top positions within hours. One questionable statement makes me question your reputation and press the back button.
4) Colors matter. http://daddu.net/the-power-of-colors/ take your time and start studying sales and conversions, A/B testing.
5) Don't ask me to review your service after sending me a report me without your link thread - I don't have time to search for your thread in the BST section. Always think about making it comfortable for the customer to leave you a review or even bribe them with a 10% discount copy for your service. 10% for a bump and a nice review sounds like a fair deal for me.
6) Don't be cheap with the free review copies while starting out. Free is a magic word and it will get you a lot of positive reviews since people tend to feel obligated after receiving free services. They will even miss the tiny mistakes in 99% cases.
7) Don't miss your chance to sell while sending reports or communicating with your customer. For example having a signature is a good non-annoying way to do it. Have a signature with your emails/PM's that offers 20% percent discount for service 'A' because you ordered service 'B' in the past. Everybody likes personalized offers and discounts. I feel really loved when I know that the discount is only for me and some 2-3 guys - not for everyone that is just willing to send you a buck. Again - start learning about conversion ratios and sales in general.
8) Customer support matters a lot. Even if your service is not the best and you did some mistakes customers will forgive if they feel that they matter a lot to you. Nobody wants to leave a negative review for a nice guy that is treating you with respect. This is probably the most important tip.
I hope it helps some of you to get more sales and profit.
