    Yesterday my rankings dropped drastically. I got no message in Webmaster Tools. Now I searched my site with site:mydomain.com and I found out that all pages are still there EXCEPT mydomain.com itself. Only the start page got banned.

    What can this be? I am absolutely clueless what happened here.

    If you know that there's nothing you've done recently that would get it banned, check if it's been hacked.

    It all looks like always. My site is not even hosted on any CMS like Wordpress, it's just pure HTML. So I guess no hacking.

    It could still be hacked and showing different content to googlebot. Check the dates of the files on the server for any that have been changed that you know wasn't done by you.

    But if it's a ban, shouldn't I get a message in Webmaster Tools?

    You should. Under search traffic > manual actions.
    Also in Google Webmaster Tools, check if there are any security issues.

    No security issues and no manual action messages. Maybe the message comes later?

    Its not a ban or you wont see your homepage in the results. I have the same problem with new website! It has 15 article written very well and +1500 words at least but only domain name is indexed

    Another website where empty categories and homepage indexed while articles dont!!!

    There is something totally weird with the crawler since recent updates

    OP's homepage is not there, everything else is still indexed, @KHer0.

    @OP Its not a manual actions then. Most probably the algorithm punished you. Are/Were you doing any link building for the site? What does your anchor text profile look like?

    Now my main is back again when I search with site:mydomain.com. But the rankings are still as bad because I am still exclusively only ranking with my underpages.

    I got some links some weeks ago but nothing wild.

    Submit it to Majestic URL submitter. I had this issue last week. Rankings dropped link 50-60 positions. Check for Negative SEO links (I use SEMrush BL auditor and Link research tools for this). Someone might be pointing bad links to you. If that is the case you can quickly get it back to ranking. If you need anything go ahead and ask me

    "Building Links" and "White hat" cannot be in the same sentence, unless it's negative. As soon as you build a link, that's grey hat at best.

    It's obviously not a manual review, though I have seen some "partial" manual reviews in the past as well. The sites weren't completely deindexed, but had a message in GWT about a penalty. So that could be the case. Also, message in GWT appears a couple days later, so keep checking it.

    Or maybe your website was down (let's say from a DDOS) and google decreased your rankings? How often do you monitor it? Recovering from this is REALLY complicated

    @seopsycho
    Hmm what exactly does the URL submitter do?

    @Nargil
    Alright, let's call it Greyhat. I don't really see it as Blackhat because it's not like I pushed the site aggressively or something. I got this site already for 4 years running and the rankings were always pretty good. I already had a manual ban last year that was absolutely randomly. I then just redesigned the site and sent a reconsider request and it got accepted and the site ranked again.
    Why the hell does my site get targeted by Google? My competitiors got real nasty backlink profiles and crappy content and they never get banned.

    Maybe you know you did something wrong – maybe you did cloaking or you hid some texts, or you spammed some sites

    First, you have to identify the severity of your offense.
    Second, is this your first offense or is it a repeat?
    Third, are you a big player or a dispensable site?
