Backlinks is the concept that started google off, and it's still the fundamental variable in their algorithm so I don't think they'll be dropping it any time soon.
if they replace that with anything, I think it will be user voting, but that's a way off, and would be easy to manipulate anyway.

I think social signals would be the next in line as the main ranking factor if Google were to ever completely discount back links from their algo
