This is somewhat old news as this just happened I believe a couple of days ago. Regardless, this is still big news because of how many people this has effected. Just yesterday though, the MTGox website posted this message:

    February 26[SUP]th[/SUP] 2014

    Dear MtGox Customers,

As there is a lot of speculation regarding MtGox and its future, I would like to use this opportunity to reassure everyone that I am still in Japan, and working very hard with the support of different parties to find a solution to our recent issues.
Furthermore I would like to kindly ask that people refrain from asking questions to our staff: they have been instructed not to give any response or information. Please visit this page for further announcements and updates.

    Sincerely,
    Mark Karpeles
    Dear MtGox Customers,

In light of recent news reports and the potential repercussions on MtGox's operations and the market, a decision was taken to close all transactions for the time being in order to protect the site and our users. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly.

    Best regards,
    MtGox Team

So, who instructed Mt. Gox not to talk, their lawyers, investigators, who? Once again, it looks like the hacking of a third party business or centralized operation will be used to temporarily disrupt the momentum of Bitcoin, a decentralized entity that was NOT hacked. It's as if the "attack the big exchanger/website" is the only trick TPTB have to attack crypto-currency, so they play the card every six months or so with a new target, through raids or paid hackers.

Insider job. They are just stealing the money and putting into their own pocket.

This sucks for some many people but its a wake up call. Don't order thousands of bitcoins and keep them with an exchange when you could keep them in your own BITCOIN WALLET.

yes it's a little old, what makes we wonder is that Mt.Gox have no idea where the bitcoins went but they dont even admit that they are stolen.

    What if.............

What if it's the government that's hacking MtGox? After all, decentralized currency IS a form of competition. It's like they're doing Negative SEO on their competitor..

Doubt it. The early reports said that Mt. Gox new of this vulnerability a long time ago and did nothing about it.

Hmm thats a lot of money, definetely something what will not make BC more popular. When its so easy to steal these coins, that will always be huge motivation for all hackers out there and who knows, maybe some goverments and so would be happy if such currency would not exist.

MTGOX are scammers, I don't think they have been hacked, I think these 750k bitcoins have been stolen by the owner of MTGOX, last Thursday I purchased 1000€ of bitcoins, and I'm still waiting for my money, their support is dead, their website is dead.

I hope someday this crypto currency hype will drop, so every review about graphics cards wouldn't be about how much they can mine

The real issue with Mt. Gox was people were treating it like a bank, storing their Bitcoin wallets online with a company that is not FDIC insured.
Just like this guy who lost 4,700+ BTC.

    oh wonder...oh wonder...

after silkroad 2 got hacked and quite some coins were stolen (as well as a lot of clones to the site) there were quite some interesting reads about how it has been done.
one of them would be this i guess - as it talks about mt.gox as well :

    http://www.deepdotweb.com/2014/02/20/here-is-the-stolen-silk-road-wallet/

some marketplaces might just be set up by scammers - but some others were hacked. and i think after having success with some clones they went for a big target like SL2. and i really do not wonder that now they went for the really big one.
inside job i guess - but i wouldn`t blame it on the owner.
there are some more quite interesting articles around that explain some stuff that happend.

and some folks out there are really on a banking spree.
funny to say that SL2 people were able to track people involved. interesting what mt.gox can bring to the table.

    Never liked BitCoin. Never will.

Too much bullshit going around it.
