The top 10 searches for 2008 are way off then what I had thought. Already knew that Obama would be one of the top.

anything there is already old and outdated... Thats why any ideas/kw's which get published suck. use a kw tool, or if not then you can check the source (google/yahoo/etc) for their top search results. Or a good idea if you want to get REALLY new searches which are hot right NOW, you can check twitter feeds. it shows what people are talking about right now, usually they are topics that are so fresh they haven't even be published online yet.
