Hi folks, I'm new here to the BHW forums and was hoping for some help.

I currently have a website which is ranking extremely well for a popular TV show niche for the keywords 'Watch * * * * * Online Free'.

It's receiving around 12K views per day with about 6K uniques. I'm currently monetizing with PopAds and Infolinks (Which I'm aware is probably the worst possible method for monetizing streaming traffic).

So far, these two ad solutions combined have brought in around $160 in 2 weeks. I've got a feeling I could make that a lot higher though with some help from the experienced on here.

To give you a breakdown of how I'm providing the streaming service, they access my website, pick their episode and on each individual episode page is 3 or 4 links to different streaming sites providing the episode.

Anybody out there got any ideas on how I could further monetize this traffic? (P.S Most of the traffic is US, UK & Australian)

Any help would be great, thank you!

You could look up 'Content Locking' here on the forum. Perhaps let the viewer watch one episode for free but the next is content locked so they have to fill in a survey.

Thanks for the recommendation, I was thinking about content locking but I'm not sure it's as effective these days in the movie niche. Do you know of any threads discussing content locking with PPD/PPA?

Sell ad space! Can you add a pre video? for instance before the main video plays an advertisement plays first?

I have used content locked TV episodes in the past and had quite good success. I used CP@Le@d but they have changed their rules since.
Try looking for the content locking script on the market place.

I don't actually host the video files myself for copyright reasons and also server strain and other problems. I simply provide links to external sites such as PutLokcer, NowVideo etc so I'm unsure how to effectively monetize it.

I found content locking to be my least profitable on movie sites. I tried various ways of doing it.
E.g. there's an offer on most CPA networks for Windows Media Player Classic. Visitors are told they must download and install it to watch the movie.

I also tried a couple of CPA networks that have their own content lockers. So when someone wants to watch a movie, the locker pops up with a selection of 4 or 5 offers to unlock the content. Again, it wasn't that great, I was getting low EPCs. Maybe it's because there's so many sites that don't actually have any real content behind the locker, so people have learnt that in most cases, filling out surveys is a waste of time. Or maybe it just so happens that the keywords I rank for don't really bring in the survey filling kind of visitors.

Something I didn't try is using a script on sale here called Content Locker Pro. What I know of CLP, is that you can populate the locker with the best performing offers from a wide variety of networks. This should definitely improve overall EPC, but I didn't try it since my initial tests with content locking was so poor.

Next, I tried promoting a movie sign up site... it was a while ago, I think it's called affilibuzz. The results were much better. The EPC was higher by several factors compared to content locking. It suited me for a while, but then after a while conversion rate started to drop, for everyone on the network. I guess they were shaving heavily.

In the end I was invited to a private network that tripled my EPC. Better conversion % and higher payout per sign up. I basically make $0.03 per unique visitor to my website. I get about 2000 UVs a day, you can do the maths :)

Bottom line is, you have to test different things and find out for yourself what works best for your site. I've certainly seen people here claiming success with content locking movies. Success is relative and subjective, and people don't always give out figures, so it's hard to tell. I can only go on what I've personally experienced. If you're savvy enough in php you can split test different offers/methods concurrently (I always prefer doing that to testing offers in series).

I haven't tried PopAds but I may give it a go, I wouldn't mind an extra $100 pocket money each month! That's an extra night of tequila rampaging haha. I've had the site 3 years, and it now earns me the equivalent of my salary in my last paid job. I'm always split testing new monetisation methods with it. You'll feel some mega satisfaction when you turn that $320/month into $3200/month just by finding the right thing to promote. You get 6K UVs a day.
What you're earning is wayyyy under par.

Good luck in your endeavours and welcome to BHW.

    Home Page:
Content lock that shit using PPI. Have a message saying your video player is out of date, get paid per video player install. Then just play the video. Simple as cake.

Thank you for your detailed response. I completely agree with you and had that inclination to begin with. I don't feel PPD/PPA converts well at all now. 5 years ago, you made a killing, but not now. As you say, more people have become accustomed to it. I feel for now I will stay away from content locking and try other methods for monetization.

I'll check out affilibuzz and see what reviews are like in 2013.

I don't suppose you could inform me of that private network and how I could maybe acquire a space? That would be perfect for me.

I'm not competent in the slightest when it comes to PHP so I will look into other ways to split test or maybe templates and frameworks to follow.

I appreciate your help and support!

My pleasure, I know how it is when you're feeling a little lost! You've taken action and done some legwork to get that much traffic to your site, which is the hard part :) I can have a word and recommend your site but I'd want to see the site first etc. Feel free to add me on skype, my username is bigbadmo.

In regards to the PHP, it's an easy script to implement... create a random number between 1 and 100... if it's under 50, print the first offer to html, if it's over 50, print the second offer. Just roll your sleeves up and get tucked in, it's a handy (and easily acquirable) skill for quick minor modifications. You look at the code, google what you don't understand, and you can work it out. I hate waiting on other people to make me stuff! There's always people willing to help others when they're genuinely trying their best.

Content lock and watch your UV's drop quickly. I don't recommend that at all. At best, you may use this for new and rare movies, but I wouldn't do it for all content, nor most.

I would also remove the infolink crap.

Find out more about your demographic.
Who's coming to your site? What movies are they interested in ? Where did they come from?
What other sites are common for them to visit? (Use Quantcast and similar resources)
Find some products that are good sellers with each specific demographic that visits your site

Rotate relevant affiliate ads (your aff links...)
Continue to focus on making your site the best it can be with rich content that ppl actually want to see and will return to your site for weekly, monthly, etc.

Check to see what your mobile traffic is like. If it's high and your site isn't responsive then start selling your mobile traffic.

If your site is in fact responsive, then once again do your research on your demographic and serve mobile ads to your mobile visitors.

*Make sure your pop-ups for both your desktop and mobile visitors only come 1-2 times a day per IP/visitor

I would also run some cheap ads on sites where you can find your target market.

    Potential Revenue

Believe it or not, with enough traffic (10k+ uvs) you'll bring in a good $25+ a day from Pop unders alone
Mobile revenue will be double that amount easily
Selling ad space of course could potentially be lucrative enough to sell $100+ a month
Your Affiliate revenue potential is endless depending on what your promoting

Just keep the user experience one that will keep them coming back and FREE

The bottom line is you want return visitors and more traffic.
Do this and by default you WILL earn more money.
