They like to make examples of people to scare away others from pirating.

Many such parents have SUCCESSFULLY counter-sued the labels for harrassment and filing frivolous suits against them since 2006. The industry has been more skittish about "making an example" of the benign file sharing behavior of students and homemakers ever since.

They can single people out because it's still illegal and they want to drop the hammer so hard that it is an actually effective deterrent, which for a lot of people, it is.

They are going after the share sites as well. Limewire just went offline, their software no longer works.

I thought you only get in trouble if you're sharing songs?

You see, fines like 80$ are realistic. WTF is this $62,500 per song shit?

Because they also factor in the number of people you have distributed the song to.

Laws in the US allow for such a thing, so you are basically paying for EVERYONE else who downloaded the songs from you.

Also, $80 per song is still ridiculously high. Songs sell on iTunes for 0.3 CENTS. What gives them the right to charge 2666 TIMES higher than their market value in SWEDEN ?

Also, how do they determine the number of people who actually got a COMPLETE copy of each song from YOU ?

How do they determine who is sharing what over a network to begin with ?

I have some very interesting reading on the whole data collection process, it's huge flaws and low accuracy and how frivolous their lawsuits actually are, and how they are mostly shooting in the dark with them hoping people will just give up without a fight.

I thought I have read that this mum sued back and the fine was lowered to some 10k $. This was still too much and she went back to the court to lower it even more. I remembering wrong?

The RIA should just give up because they have such a bad track record with actually receiving money from these BS suits, and it doesn't scare anyone.

The good news is that WHEN the US hits hyperinflation this Mom will be able to pay a couple of mil no sweat! Give it a couple of months, two years at the most.

Has anyone heard the justification for this? Why so much per song? Why not just however much was incurred via the download/uploads...?
