Hello, I have a question for those with experience running multiple mobile proxies at a single location.

When you have 30, 50, or 100 dongles operating, how much outbound bandwidth do you use?

Is a 1 Gbps uplink enough?

How many modems can realistically work well on a 1 Gbps connection?

I understand that not all modems will be pushing maximum speed at the same time, but based on your experience, how many modems can you actually load onto a 1 Gbps uplink without problems?
 
Yeah, 1 Gbps is enough, but if you're doing heavy stuff, better cut down the number of modems a bit.
 
If you're running 30, 50, or 100 mobile dongles (modems) at a single location, a 1 Gbps uplink can be sufficient depending on the type of usage.


Here’s the breakdown:


  • Mobile dongles usually don't each max out their mobile connection (4G LTE typically ranges from 5–50 Mbps real-world per device, not theoretical 100+ Mbps).
  • At light/moderate loads (e.g., casual browsing, API calls, automation), most dongles will not be fully saturated at the same time.
  • Heavy use (e.g., high-volume scraping, video streaming, large uploads) will push your bandwidth needs much higher.

Some numbers to help you:


  • Suppose each dongle averages 5 Mbps outbound (a pretty active usage).
  • 100 dongles × 5 Mbps = 500 Mbps outbound — comfortably under 1 Gbps.
  • If usage spikes and each dongle averages 10 Mbps, that’s 1,000 Mbps = 1 Gbps, meaning you would be maxing out.

Real-world experience:


  • In actual setups, 70–100 dongles can comfortably run on a 1 Gbps line if you are doing moderate traffic (scraping, light API calls, occasional uploads).
  • If you expect sustained heavy loads (bulk file uploads, continuous video uploads, real-time streaming from many devices), you would need more than 1 Gbps (or plan for bandwidth management, quality of service (QoS), and modem throttling).

Additional things to consider:


  • Network equipment must be good quality — cheap switches/routers can bottleneck before your 1 Gbps even becomes the limit.
  • Carrier limits — mobile carriers may throttle individual dongles even before you saturate your main uplink.
  • Latency and stability — even if total bandwidth is enough, too many active TCP sessions without proper handling can cause instability.
  • Load balancing — if possible, having two 1 Gbps uplinks (or a 10 Gbps line) would provide overhead and reliability.

Yes, 1 Gbps uplink is usually sufficient for 50–100 mobile modems, as long as you're not doing heavy data transfers on all of them simultaneously.
