I absolutely love this stuff. Check out the writings of Ray Kurzweil and Vernor Vinge (just two of many) if you want to see a bit broader overview on this. People talk about the pace at which technology grows without realizing that since the technology is creating new technology itself, the pace of change is accelerating even more rapidly than we realize.
To put it into perspective, the advances in computing capacity between 2000 and today, just 8 years, are thousands of times as much advance as we made from 1950-2000. I have a cell phone that has more computing power than ALL OF NASA had in 1969 when we sent a man to the moon. What will we have in 2050 or 2108?
Love it.
