Hi,

I bought a website from a service provider here on BHW. Part of the package was 2 years of free hosting. However, after 7 months or so I see that thread has now been closed and I have not been able to contact the service provider.

My website is still up and running, however I do not have access to its hosting account. Is it possible to migrate my WP to a new host without having access to my current host? If so, how? I do have access to the domain host so I am able to change nameservers.

Thanks in advance!

You can use your hosts file on your computer for this. Basically you can connect to your new host using Filezilla for example, and upload your files and DB there. Then in your hosts file use the IP of your new host to check if everything works. If it does, then you switch nameservers.

Hosts file tutorials can be found online :)

Good luck!

PS: there are also hosting companies who offer free website migrations to new customers, maybe a solution for you!

I'm assuming you don't have FTP access. If that's the case you're pretty much stuck with copying and pasting the content. Potentially using a scraper if you have a bunch of content.

You can use WP Clone to copy everything to a temp domain, change the name servers to your new hosting account, create WP on there and then use WP clone to make it live again.

A bit of a pain but certainly can be done.

But as @Blackhat Lifter mentioned most hosting companies will move that for you if you have cpanel access.

If you do have access to WordPress at least, using some migration plugin like WP Clone can do the work,
there are a few plugins that will allow you to manage (download, copy, etc...) the website files, which can be really useful in case the 1st one didn't work,
If you don't have any kind of access, then sadly, you won't have any way to "migrate" it and should rather go for copying the website content (either using some plugin/bot) or hiring a VA

Use wp duplicator plugin or easy wp migration plugin. Both can make a backup without accessing you server. Then you download the copy local to your pc -> upload it on new server and run and you are ready to go. Just remind to do that before changing the nameservers. If you need further help(for free) feel free to reach me :)

Duplicator pro will also work. If you have Wordpress admin access.

If you don’t have admin access, or hosting access or a backup of the site, then you might struggle.

If it's a WordPress site, then the best option would be to install a backup plugin. I use UpdraftPlus and I think it's one of the best backup plugins. Install it and download the backup to your computer. If you're stuck somewhere, leave a message here and I would be glad to help. :)
