Why did so many people when buying bitcoin in the early days of exchanges have a lot of problems with paypal? What were all the problems with paypal since it was one way to buy bitcoins a really long time ago?

If you want to know about bitcoin, study localbitcoins marketplace (dead now I think) and the dark web. Weed is one (if not the only "legit" ) of the biggest consumer product being pushed with bitcoin. Dealers on the dark web had a 5+ year free run of selling with bitcoin while the price was growing. Thats the real reason bitcoin exploded. It was used to buy what the people wanted, easier than ever before.

So they traced based on description mentioning crypto ? That was easy to avoid for users. Other than that, how will they know what are the funds being sent for ?

Yeah, when dealing crypto you had to warn the other side not to mention crypto in the memo field
