Microsoft bribes Oz to ditch Firefox

'Get rid of it or get lost'

Microsoft isn't just bribing people to use its search engine. It's bribing people to ditch Firefox for Internet Explorer.

"We're buried $10,000 somewhere on the internet and if you're the first one to find it, you get to keep it," Microsoft's Australian arm has told the Land of Oz. "But you'll never find it using old Firefox.

"(So get rid of it, or get lost)."

Microsoft tells The Reg that its ‘TenGrandIsBuriedHere' competition "is designed to be a fun and entertaining way for PC users to experience some of the new features in Internet Explorer 8. The competition is only available to Australian residents and runs from 17 June through 17 September.

The tone of the clues, instructions, and website reflects the spirit of competition we hope to create through this unique online challenge."

You see, Microsoft has "cleverly concealed" a virtual voucher for that $10,000 on a webpage that only Internet Explorer 8 can view. But to win the ten grand, you'll have to endure more than IE8. You'll also have to ingest some Web2.0rhea.

Microsoft's four steps to finding the buried loot:

    * Ditch the web browser you're using. If you try to find the $10,000 with Firefox, you'll get nowhere.

    * Download Microsoft's best ever browser, Internet Explorer 8. It's the only browser capable of cracking the clues.

    * Follow @tengrand_IE8on Twitter for the daily clues. Clues will be released at random times from Friday 19th June.

    * Use the clues and your brilliance to deduce where the $10,000 is hidden.

If you're the first Microsoft whore to find the dough, you get to keep it. Or at least part of it. Microsoft says "Tell your friends. It's not as stupid as it sounds. With all the stuff you have on, you won't be able to keep an eye out for all clues 24/7. So team with your friends to catch all the clues on Twitter."

So you'll have to endure Internet Explorer 8 and Twitter for less than $10,000. Not much of a bribe, that.

    Not worth it.

CLIFFNOTES: IE8 sucks, Microsoft knows it, they're throwing money at a stagnant problem (Firefox still owns them)... typical and this $10,000 BS scavenger e-kindergarten esque hunt is only good and valid to Aussies.

    Hit "Thanks" =).

Why would I ever hit thanks for that post...

I might do this contest if I was using IE as my primary browser, without that no way. How the hell would you find it anyways, would it just be a page saying "YOU HAVE WON THE 10K"?

You'll need that 10g to help hire an expert to clean all the viruses and spyware from your pc after one day of using IE...

Goes to show you, if you can't build a better product, you can always pay people to use a substandard one.

I'm an Aussie and I use firefox but this the first time I have heard of this. I will do there petty little scavenger hunt then win there ten grand (tight arses) and do a ten grand ad campaign why everyone should use firefox.

Please we might be Australians but we are not backward, try a third world country like zimbarbwai where they have interent and obvousley need the money because I have had so many people wanting me to ship over there gold bullion but for some reason they need me to send money to do it.

What's incredibly funny about this all is that a company like Microsoft can only scrape together a single $10,000 dollar prize to make people switch.

I have seen mom and pop gas stations offering bigger prize money. Seriously, that is like the price of one copy of 2008 server enterprise!

    Fuckin cheapskates

Whoever came up with this idea + the cash needs to get fired. Never before has it looked so desperate for good ol' Bill to take such measures in place.

firefox is for newbs, let the newbs cry while microsoft counts its billions, if u didn't know they plan on doubling there 50 billion by 2012.

thats how powerful microsoft is, new kids use firefox. i honestly don't have any idea how firefox became so popular.

have no fear i DO have pity for the firefox users.

disclaimer: newbs are users that started with firefox and talk shit about IE that never even used IE.

microsoft is number 1 for a reason. firefox doesn't have shit on microsoft as a company

(i might as well chim my 2cents in since everyone is bashing IE)

i think its funny that i just respond to microsofts free advertising method, all the kids are going to "talk"/argue about this since how they microsoft wanted it to be, i take my comments back since this isn't even a bash against microsoft but a advertisement about microsoft.
