What I been doing is finding key phrases using Google Adwords tool. I cross check each key phrase that the Google Adwords tool comes up with a google search with "". So for example, Google Adwords Tool comes up with Quick Weight Loss Tips and 8,100 monthly search volume for December 09...then I'll cross check that by doing a Google Search for "Quick Weight Loss Tips" and it comes up 101,000.

My Question is, for a micro niche website, what should the threshold be for the Google Search with quotes? I'm assuming 101,000 is too high to try to rank for.

    Thanks in advance.

"exact search" gives a rough idea about competition.you should check top 10 sites for the kw.

many ppl here say anything below 50k exact are good to go..but again what if there is pr7,6,5 websites in top 10..it will be a lot difficult for mfas to rank for such kw.

    so i would suggest,,
    exact phrase < 50k
    competition level=
    atleast 1 pr 0 in top 10..
few sites less than 1 year domain age..
    strictly no pr6,7,..in top 10..
and a nice green page in seo comp module in market samurai.

(lol this are just few parameters...someone plz give more details as i cant recall anything else)

I never pay too much attention to the number of competing pages.

Whenever I find a niche with enough searches a month I run it in Market Samurai to get a look at the 1st ten competitors (page 1 results).

Page 1 is where I wanna be and for that I have to kick someone out....:D

I agree with this. Even if you have competition that is 101,000 - if the first page without quotes is full of sites with pr0 or pr1/2 then I would think with enough effort it would be easy to rank. If all sites on the first page for the keyword are pr5 and above then I would stay clear. That is my experience anyway.

I agree with this as well....you should also be checking the top 10 sites' amount of backlinks...

You are always competing with the top 10 only so just focus on the number of searches. I would run a narrow search on the "quick weight loss tips" itself and pick 5 that are getting 3000-5000 searches each and work on them. You have 5 chances to get ranked not only one ;)

I really don't get one thing. How come in g's external kw tool, when I enter a keyword, for local monthly I get 30,000, and for global I get 5,000

How is that possible, aren't global supposed to be always more than the local searches?

Local is the amount from the last month from the country you select.

Global is worldwide and the average of the last 12 months.

When the local search shows a great amount more than the global search it indicates that the trend for this KW is not a steady one.

Be careful with going only by the local search.
There are factors that inflate these figures.

Like now in January, the December stats for products may be higher than normal because of Christmas.

Or in Summer, the stats for bikinis will show a profitable niche but this will fade out when Summer's over...

That's not to say that there's no money to be made based on these stats.
I have a very profitable Halloween site that has 200K searches and very little competition.
Of course the searches are only that high just before Halloween.

The majority of my sites show a steady trend around the year. Because of that I can afford to have a couple that only show real action once a year.

Thanks for all the useful answers. So is that the only way Page Rank plays a role? If you have a high page rank, than you can typically out rank other sites with lower PR if you do on page optimization correctly?

Basically, yes. Also, it determines the importance of backlinks. A bl from a PR7 will give you much more credit (probably twice as much) than a PR6 site.

I think the backlinks required to get a certain PR grow exponentially, e.g. for a PR4 you need 10,000 BL, for PR5 you need 20,000, for PR6 you need 40,000, for PR7 - 80,000 and so on.

I once read a very comprehensive article about PR. I'll search for it and post a link to it here, if I can find it.

EDIT: Ah, that was easy. Here you go guys, a really comprehensive guide on PR:

One more question. I see when people are looking to see how many back links you have, they use Yahoo Site Explorer or whatever. Why can't you simply do a google search like "mywebsite.com" and see how many pages come up in the results that has that exact match. Wouldn't that give you a rough estimate of where you're at?

That will only give you indexed pages, not indexed backlinks.

All right thanks. I guess I was missing a few things when I was optimizing. I was only doing what I said in the first post and staying under 20k.

Lower amount of results, easier to rank, it's really that simple, it's just finding keywords with high searches and low results, once you've got some keywords, play around with them and find the best keywords and your done with KW research.

I guess it could be a quantity game too. If you choose a bunch of keywords that have barely any competition but google kw tool shows like 500 local search volume then you could get some traffic just by ranking for a bunch of those.
