Mexico, Cuba, or Dominican Republic? Short family holiday?

Any recommendations for a short family holiday? We've looked into these three places but not really sure. The trip would be in April for roughly 12 +/- days.

Anything to take into consideration? Safety and the likes, especially with a child under 10?

PS. We were mainly looking at beach places at this time.

Edit: Can someone please move this to the Lounge? Accidentally posted it in the wrong forum.

    What nationality are you?

If you are American, I would not visit any of these places. Hell, if I was any nationality I would not visit any of these places. Why not go to the British Virgin Islands, or St Martaan, or St Vincent.

All of these places are less than 100 miles from the Dominican.

Mexico or Cuba is suicide, and the Dominican is risky, but not as bad as the previous two.

All three of those places would be fine!

Cuba has an amazing beach, but the food is bad and very bland do to some laws they have on importing spices... etc.

You can't really go wrong with Mexico, as long as you pick a nice resort! I like the part of Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico because the beaches are way better than on the west coast. If you like to party, Cancun will be the place for you, as there is tons of nightlife and clubs... but if you want a more relaxing and less crowded resort, pick somewhere in the mayan.

I haven't been to the Dominican Republic, although I here it is really nice! The Bavaro beach would be the place to be there.

Which ever you pick, I'm sure you'll have a great time! Just remember a vacation is what you make of it! Btw make sure you check up on the hotels on Tripadvisor.

I'm from Europe. The two places that came to mind were Cancun and Punta Cana.

We've not really looked into British Virgin Islands, why would you recommend it?

Thailand is definitely a potential destination though not at this time. I think ~12 days in Thailand would be too short.

In regards to your comment about replacing "forum" with "section", I actually wrote "section" at first but changed it to "forum". As far as I'm concerned "forum" is just as correct as "section" and I've seen people refer to sections in terms of "forum" in many different places.

Hey, thanks for your reply. Bali was one of the places that was to be considered at first but we weren't really sure. We've definitely looked into Thailand though if I was to go there, I think 12 days would probably be too short.

Why did you say no to Mexico? I've heard many good things about Mexico as a holiday destination with many positive reviews though then again most of them were online.

Why would I not go to Mexico?

In January 2012, the Mexican government reported that over 47,515 people have been killed as a result of cartel violence since 2006.

As a European, Cuba would not be bad I guess, but we Americans have bad relationships with Cuba.

The dominican is a poor hellhole and you would be hard pressed to find a nice area not in poverty. If you want to go the caribbean, go to the british virgin islands.

I agree with these 2 places, been to both. I really loved Barcelo all inclusive in Punta Cana. It's cheap and if you book in advance, ask for the Presidential suite, it was only about $130 a day, and was Amazing. Food and drinks are included.

Puerto Rico is actually American soil, nice beaches, all across the island. Dominican Republic is swell too, but money exchange and been a republic makes things a little weird. But it's a beautiful place.

Cuba, oh the gorgeous Cuba. This island is magnificent, it's actually a time capsule. Meaning you visit Cuba and still looks like 1950's. The revolution and old that. It's a unique experience. Mexico! Well Mexico is divided into different areas/sub-regions. The tourist area don't really show what Mexico have to offer. It's a mix of ancestors, history, culture.

Any place would be a real experience. Now that been said at least from US soil we have issues flying to and out of Mexico, Dominican Republic and of course Cuba. So Puerto Rico offers the flavor and mix of culture of all this areas in one small island without the worry that if a war explotes you won't be locked in. :D

I absolutely hated Cuba, I haven't seen such poverty even in Kenya!

Not to mention the nonsense with Peso that only locals can use, and pesos that only foreigners can use, the fact that there wasn't anything in the shops, no internet and the list goes on and on :)

If we're judging countries by the amount of murders, then you better not go to the US because there have been 95,184 people killed since 2006:eek:...

Anyways, the touristy parts of Mexico, such as the Yucatan Peninsula are safe. It's the areas of Mexico near the US border that are not safe.

If you're looking for a more exotic location, try somewhere like the Maldives or Fiji.

Is Mexico and the Dominican Republic really that bad? Would we be pestered by people?

What happen with them is that hispanic are in the middle of a conflict of becoming a majority in the US surpassing the blacks and the whites. Now that has an influence in the cultures and this is where Puerto Rico becomes the bad apple. You see PR is close to DR and PR and DR are pretty much the same except PR is Americanized and DR copies PR. Now that goes to New York where Puertorricans and Dominicans majority reside, now this cultures Americanized have an influence on the younger generation of Mexicans that are more Americanized. Now Mexico and DR been a republic the laws are differents making them a no man's land. Now to add Mexico also get's pushed by Colombia drugs and the border, because the routes from the caribbean in this case PR witch have direct connection with US and Panama are been hit hard by the ATF.

If you are going to DR go to Santo Domingo, if you going for Mexico go to Jalisco.

What is your reason for recommending those two? Thanks for the reply btw.

Well Santo Domingo offers a lot of the DR culture and is a little more modern. The same with Jalisco.

People here not recommending Mexico probably never even been their . Obviously Mexico does have parts that are complete shit holes as well as any other country. I been to both Cancun and Cabo San Lucas both are very good destinations to have a great vacation, you will not regret going.

i've lived in most those places, and am happy you're going on vacation brother. i would recommend the mexican caribe, maybe stay at the hyatt cancun caribe - do the "inclusive" cause you'll save money even if you only use it a little bit. you're not going to get proper hospitality (or food) in cuba or the dominican, although the patois is nice. just my opinion. but i would avoid baja, cabo & acapulco - they are nothing compared to the eastern coast of mexico, and acapulco isn't really "family fun". make sure you visit xel ha - it will change your world!

Have you visit the dominican republic?, if not shut the fuck up. Here you can find more information about my country.

If you are coming to DR, make sure to go Punta cana, samana or cabarete. Santo Domingo is a big city, and i bet you must be tired of cities and their uproar
