Before the google update this month I was killing it with my blackhat sites. Unfortunately all BH sites got penalized, even though they survived all updates in the past. What methods do still work for you guys? I am in a very competitive niche (if not the most competitive) and this is exactly what google is targeting atm. No it's not payday but similar. I have the feeling that they are removing sites manually for the keywords like "payday loans", so even if you find a way to rank on page1 you will get removed.

Seems clear that the top 10 or 20 niches are being micromanaged by Google (payday loans, diet and variations on those)
I'm pretty certain Google actually have "eyes on" those terms almost daily and the algorithm is hardly used.

Matt Cutts said almost as much a couple of times in the last 6 weeks.
Obviously they have no time to personally police the millions and millions of potential commercial terms with people, but for the niches like you describe, there is likely individual micro analysis of the sites going on.
So now the trick if you are in one of those niches is not to beat an algorithm - but to beat a person.
And that person is specifically looking for BH techniques being employed, and likely pretty good at spotting them.

Is it possible that a method doesn't work in a highly competitive niche, but may work in other niches?
Also do you think that only the main keywords are reviewed? For example only "payday loans", but "payday loans uk 2013" remains unreviewed?

In the military, this song and dance is classified as, "Cloak and Dagger Guerrilla Warfare."

As SEO has evolved and will continue to evolve, so MUST BH. With the latest set of changes, one MUST:

(a). Be able to constantly make "In flight" adjustments on the dime; more so now than ever before
(b). No longer telegraph or publicize BH tactics/secrets/schemes
(c). Adopt a mentality of STEALTH BH

We have eyes on us, be aware!

    Manual Webspam Actions:
Google announced that it is now including examples of problems in its messaging to webmasters who have been hit with manual webspam penalties. Google's Matt Cutts actually mentioned it in a Q&A session at SMX Advanced on Tuesday night, but now he has put out a Webmaster Help video discussing it further.

You still have to beat the algo first. :)

Not really. If the serp is being manually reviewed, you can be in the top 100 and the person reviewing the serp can boost you to number 1 if your site beats every webpage that is on page 1.

Obviously, it will not work this way. One person will review the top 100 or 1000 pages then he will hand pick the best ones. The good ones will then be given to another person or team where they will get evaluated. Then the lucky or high quality pages will most likely get a boost. Or a system that is similar to this but you get the idea.

Its humanly imposible to control 20% of internet, even so the algo fails a lot. So, why do you worry? You can start again, so pick a good niche and you are ready to go again, dont have to put all the eggs in the same basket, so diversify your revenue as much as you can.

They combat webspam manually, they don't sit and vote who got the best website.

A few years ago Google's finances revealed that their spending included an army of thousands of SERP reviewers.

They invest millions of $$$ into manual SERP review.

    This.

And so, when you look at those payday niches and similar: an opportunity has presented itself. If Google carries on with its micromanagement of the niche (no doubt to appease shareholders and very timely at that given the massive coverage paydays are getting in the UK right now), only authority sites will emerge.

Slow and steady, build yourself an authority payday loans site. Provide information, articles, how-tos, videos, guidelines. What to look out for, how not to be ripped off, get industry interviews.

And at the last - get a comparison table of APR rates for different loan lengths, put in a review system for each provider, encourage community interaction.

Then put in your affiliate links to those providers' websites.

Hey presto - authority site that Google will love. Slow and steady get the site up there, use creative link building tactics. It's exactly how sites like money supermarket and money saving expert started. And man, does the payday loan industry need it.

Of course they do. They vote who gets the top serps or page 1.
You are listening to Cutts and reading a lot of propaganda. They may tell you that they just eliminate websites that spam but in reality they try to control and manipulate as much as they can.
G00gle is nothing but a company and they will do a lot in their power to make money as best as they can with as little punishment as they can.

The worst part is what if I spend days, weeks, months even... making the best authority site about payday loans and over the span of a few days some jealous mofo builds thousands of spam links to my domain with my anchor text?

How does Google tell if it's me building the links or someone else... or do they not care and penalize my site anyway?

    Food for thought.

They don't care. However, if your site is very high quality, you will not get a penalty for negative seo assuming that your backlink profile is 100% organic.
It is because I did try to spam 500,000 backlinks on a competitor and his site didn't even move. I spammed it two more times and it still didn't move. This is a very low competition keyword.
Which makes me believe that g00gle does manually review their serps and put high quality sites on first page.

Everthing still works. Just don't do blog comments and profile links in first tier, use your anchor less than 15%, do some additional social links like twitter and facebook. That is almost it.

There was a June update? None of my sites moved in June, nor any of my competitors really (aside from the occasional 1-2 position raise/drop).
