Hi everybody,

I recently wrote a series of posts on my experiences running an importing/dropshipping business and how I would do it again. I thought it would be helpful for anybody on BHW considering going into outsourcing / importing / dropshipping / whatever you want to call it.

I hope it is ok for me to share these on BHW. If not, please let me know and I will delete/modify this thread.

Here is an excerpt from the article (I would post the entire thing here, but it is a bit long due to how comprehensive they are) -

Most of you probably don?t know this, but one of the very first profitable businesses I ran was an importing company. From the age of 13 til the age of 16, I imported a whole bunch of random stuff and sold it on various websites. It was really difficult when I was getting started, partially due to my lack of experience, and partially due to the fact that there was nobody there to help me.

My friend Devan Earle is thinking about getting into the import arbitrage business and mentioned it to me last night.

Our conversation made me remember how impossible it seemed for me when I first got started, and how many questions there were that needed answering?

Where do you find suppliers? How do you know what?s going to sell? When you know that, how do you know what to determine to sell? How do you eliminate the risk of scams and bad shipments? Where do you even begin to research?

Our conversation got so in depth that I decided to turn it into a blog post.

So this is basically going to be an A-Z guide on what I would do, step by step, if I was going to start over again at importing products from Asia and selling them online. I?ll also include some insights on what made me choose these steps. If you plan on trying this out, I would suggest bookmarking this blog post and referencing it in the future. I am planning on it being a complete guide and will be continually adding to it based on questions I get from readers.

I encourage you to go through step by step and not jump around, as I put it in this order for a specific reason. This is the order I would do things in, and the order that I learned them in.

I will also tell you the story of my rise and fall in the importing industry ? or at least the interesting parts

I got an incredible amount of questions after this article went viral on Reddit, so I made a follow-up guide.

The follow-up post is focused specifically on finding a good product to import and sell.

Though my last article did help a lot of people, I got a TON of questions from readers asking how to find a good product to sell. Out of all of the questions I got, 90% of them must have been asking for help with some part of the product selection and buying process.

What this means is that I failed to explain this part of the process well enough in my last post; which is terrible, because that is the most important part!

Though I answered everybody?s questions as well as I could, there were undoubtedly many confused people who did not have the time to email me or comment.

I decided to put all the responses I sent to fellow entrepreneurs together and craft them into a (hopefully) beautiful Step-by-Step guide, which you should all know by now I love.

So without further ado, here is the Step-by-Step Guide on How To Find a Profitable Product To Sell?

Hope you guys can find some value in these!

China has much more opportunities than any other coutry, but sure with more risks.

If you know the rules, you can make big money.

Hope your guys luck...

I've been looking into this for a few months now. I cant wait to read the blog post. Thanks!

Cool will have a look through these. Cheers mate.

Let me know what you think!

Whats the start up costs?

You can get by with $250, but it would be much less riskier with $500-ish to experiment with.

Just trying to learn the rules :)

Thanks.

Awesome, let me know what you think!

I just finished reading the blog post. It was very informative and it left me wanting to learn more. Quick question: what is a good margin of profit percent wise? You really caught the beginning of the airsoft wave. I'm hoping your success wasnt entirely related to finding one great product. Also, I've been considering selling 1:1 quality otterboxes. I have a few samples already. Great quality, but most likely fake.

I've always wanted to get into ebay/amazon selling and the blog really inspired me. However, as a 16yr old in Australia, I doubt I could take action as I can see that most of the sales will be from US and I am aware that international shipping from AUS to US would be really costly.

Thanks for reading, and glad to hear you liked it. I wouldn't consider any product with less than a 50% margin, which means I sell it for 2x more than my cost. I would look for even higher than that though.

It felt like I was at the end of the airsoft wave :) I do think much of it is due to one good product, that is definitely the most important part.

They are probably fake, but you are on a blackhat forum :p

Really interesting, bookmark'd

Thanks!

Interesting reading.

Thanks!

Yea, but Australia is a growing market with a great relationship with China. I'd bet there is money to be made.

So, please correct me if I am mistaken, you made a lot of money with only one product (the airsoft guns) sourced through alibaba, right?

I understand that the regulations killed that product However what is preventing you of doing the exact same thing but with another product?

Is it harder now with ebay? Do you consider ebay the best way to sell those products ? What about flee markets... Is it possible to make even more money there?

Thanks in advance.

Martin

I think there must be some online market places in Australia, you can do this there. And as I know, Australia and New zealand are the biggest milk, baby food and nutrition exportors for China (As recent year, the problems of food, especially baby food, are more and more frequency and important). There is some gold you can dig even you are 16 year, just need to find out.

Dealextreme got alot of products that got premium free shipping to australia, just a tip ;)

I didn't continue with it at the time just because I was young and didn't feel like doing it anymore. My goal in life is $1bn and didn't need the money, so I went down a different path that I thought would get me closer to that.

I think it is probably a little bit harder now, but I also think that we will be looking back at it in 5 years saying "It was so easy back then!". I never tried Flea Markets, but I did almost try selling to flea market merchants as a supplier to them. Never got around to it before the ban though.

Hope this helps,
Will

Absolutely. You just need to think about it a little different and find a unique angle in your market. Ever obstacle is an opportunity from another perspective, you just need to find that perspective.

Awesome share

Thanks!

Interesting read, thank you :)
Will for sure think about this.
I never imported anything in my life so far :D
