Before a keyword gets added to your list of Keywords, ALWAYS type it into Google and check the results manually.

Only write it if you KNOW you can rank in the top 3.

Requirements:

  • Do the titles match the keyword's search intent?
If you search for "How long to drive across Scotland?" But the articles are about "How to visit Scotland" Then that's a really good sign that you can win!
Zero competition keywords are gold.

  • How authoritative the Domain is?
Ideally, you want the domain rating of most to be lower than your own site. You can use the free backlinks checker by Ahrefs to see the DR and the top 100 backlinks. That way you know what you are going after. And for the backlinks, if it's hard to get, most of the time it's a good backlink.

  • Are there forums on page 1?
If you see Reddit, Quora, or niche forums then you can probably beat these. Google only ranks forums if there are no half-decent articles.

  • What's the word count of the top 5 articles?
Open each in a new tab and use the SEO Minion chrome extension to give the word count. The optimal scenario is that the articles are short (500 - 800 words).

  • What's the content quality like?
While each page is open, look at: -
  • Is it poorly written?
  • Big chunks of text?
  • Stock photos?
  • Bad grammar?
  • Not enough headings?
We can beat that!

Ok, you have a keyword that you can rank for. Whats next? Get articles and post a article on your website regarding that keyword?

Sometimes a weak site can be confusing, for example, one of our clients are in the tops where the minimum DR of other sites DR 70 +, and his DR 26. Just links are hidden from ahrefs.

I agree that forums used to be a strong signal, forums could be beaten. It used to be.

Before 2020, there were a lot of farms, like mechanicalcaveman.com - all the keywords were taken from car forums, but now having a forum in Google TOP-10 doesn't guarantee that you will easily rank at that top. There are many examples of forums first, and then articles.

Since the last update, i can see more and more forums on first page

Google has been funny for a while, this claim is pretty popular around here, well the Big G's have been eavesdropping..View attachment 217203

yes, it is kinda messed up right now, but hey I do think that there will be a SERP correction after the update because Google has gone way too far in this update. And that's why I still think having forums in the 1-3 positions is a good signal.

Is this still valid? Can a weak website outrank reddit and quora?

Women relationship topics are, for one, a niche where forums rank above 90% of other blogs.

Maybe because Google knows that the ladies actually prefer to read comments from the community when it comes to matters of the heart.

And the blogs that do rank are run by "Lifestyle type bloggers", and they don't really care about SEO, because they mostly use Instagram + Pinterest.

For the most part, yes. But I would recommend waiting to see how the SERPs behave with a few posts before going all in.

I´ve also seen this on many case studies and success stories on different platforms where most of those blogs are "personal" type blogs.

Meaning, people just looking to document their journey.

so you really have to read thoroughly each article in the search result? That's so much work but worth the price

Yeah, keyword research is the foundational base of SEO, so you do need to invest a lot of time and effort in it.
