I've had a few PM's in response to comments I've made in threads about how easy it is to make a profitable, hands-free viral news site. So I'm going to tell you how to do it right now. Looking at my signature link you're probably wondering "why the hell would someone promoting writers advocate stealing from them?" Well, there is no easy answer to that, other than 90% of the stuff I scrape is actually images and other nonsense that the Facebook crowd love. Will I get caught doing this? The first thing people keep asking is how can I get away with scraping content. I'll explain it as follows: 1. Google and other big sites constantly do it. 2. There are a thousand other sites scraping it as well - you can't all get found out. 3. Use fake whois info. 4. You are actively not trying to rank, so your chances of being found are minimal. To address point 4, the key to this strategy is to IGNORE Google. Yep, you are not interested in search engines. Why? Well: - you will hardly rank for anything anyway - you will be leaving a footprint to be found by if the site employs a bot or outsourcers to find copyright infringements. What can I do if I get caught? 1. Host in another country and if the site goes down, just upload a back-up copy onto another account and start again. 2. Say sorry, take down the content and scrape from another site instead. 3. Find something safer. If I am ignoring search engines, where is the traffic coming from? - Social media. STEP 1: Create A Site Get a cool domain name, like megaviralnews.com or something. Get a godaddy $1.99 coupon to make this cheap. Get some cheap shared hosting. Dreamhost often offer $20 a year hosting via coupon. Domain and webspace for $22 means close to zero to lose if it goes down. I always use Wordpress Genesis. It's awesome, responsive, lightweight and HTML5 with structured mark-up. So it works well on all devices without messing around. Pick a Genesis theme (Genesis and themes are always in the download section on BHW for free), and install it in a new copy of wordpress. Keep the theme simple, white and non-distracting. Forget fluff, you want people focused on content - and adverts. I then use an RSS scraper to pull in the viral news articles from one or more source sites. I use the WPMU Premium scraper plugin, but you could also use feedwordpress or Wp-robot (I think, never used it but I think it's an RSS scraper). I then use an auto tagging plugin to create a tag feed, plus wordfence to protect the site from morons. For the advertising I use a free pop-up plugin (search the wordpress repository, there are loads) and Adrotate pro, which is a premium plugin that allows me to geo-and-device target advertising and rotate ads across the site. I also use the WPMU Premium plugin WP Smush it, which optimises image size to keep things fast loading. Get a great logo and the site is done....apart from setting your robots.txt file to not encourage bots to sniff your content. If you're paranoid you can block the googlebot using htaccess. Getting Traffic To Your News Site This is where you need automation. What I have done is use the following to drive traffic: 1. Twitter For twitter I have bought 100 or so PVA accounts and used Twidium inviter (you could use followliker) to build followers using follow/unfollow method. I target them to follow the followers of other viral news sites (viralnova is great), humor sites, funny twitter accounts, comedians and anything else similar. I then set every account up in a Twitter RSS poster (I use twitterfeed.com) and set each account to post a few link per day to twitter. MY 100-odd accounts currently have about 76k followers. 2. SNAP I use the SNAP plugin to drive traffic to other social networks, using multiple created accounts. For example I have found great success posting to flipboard. Flipboard is on all Samsung android phones by default and is more widely looked at then you would think. One story got picked up by other boards and sent 20k visitors in a day for example. 3. Facebook Twitterfeed.com can also post to facebook, so make use of that feature, I do with about 50 PVA FB accounts. 4. Tumblr I'm auto posting the content to 11 tumblr blogs as well. They were aged ones I picked up with followers. The Result Every day the site I'm describing scrapes and posts 20 viral items, covering photo's, videos, jokes etc. All the linked accounts post that content and drive traffic to the site. I average anywhere between 200-20000 visitors a day, I average around 6k. Revenue, from adsense, pop-ups/unders, opt-ins which I mail to using a hands-free autoresponder and CPA offers averages $100 a week. Now obviously the key here is to get one established, learn and scale it up with more. I was going to do that, but got stuck on 5 sites as my "proper" project, my evangelical goal of providing a marketplace for people to buy great content from great writers on, has taken over....well my entire life to be honest! But the method works, it is relatively low risk, unless you are unlucky, AND it is truly AUTOMATED 100% income.
