Building a Legit Business Part 1

I wanted to write a new thread that focused on helping people build a legit business that will help them evolve their careers on and off of the internet. Most of this method has been seen before, however nobody has really put it together as I am going to do. Time to hold your hand.. This method is based off of turning an online business into an offline business, So you are getting the best of both worlds. It takes time, it also takes a plan. However if you just begin applying you will make money. I wouldn't recommend this to any 16 year old kid, however you can definitely twist this into your own method. You will be dealing directly with business and people all over the world, so at least have a business type attitude.

    To begin:

You can either start online or offline. However you need some SEO knowledge and also need to be able to sound like you know what your talking about. If you want to start offline, with no money. Than do the following...

Collect a group of offline businesses, target the ones with bad online reputations (I know what your thinking, but just continue reading). Collect a list of all the businesses in your town if you live in a small area. If you live in a City than your lucky because you have a lot to choose from!

    Find business like the following...
    SC20130219-162902.png SC20130219-162925.png SC20130219-163138.png

Find attractions or restaurants with bad reviews on your smart phone. Frank's restaurant in the far right picture is a perfect business to target. I like to target gym's and music shops etc. You see apartments in the far left picture. People don't usually think that apartments are good to target, but if they need to fill their rooms and they have bad ratings. You can help them get people in the door, your almost like a real estate agent now! But you don't do the selling, you simply help them with exposure. I'll explain how in a minute.

After you have your list together, you need to look at exactly what each person needs. If they have a facebook and twitter page than see how many followers and page likes they have. Since they have bad ratings, they don't usually have a very high level of networking. Therefore their business looks week and unpopular (which you will need to describe to them) there is already something you can help them approve. So begin writing these things down for each business, all of their week points. They have 2 stars in google, there is something you can help them approve, so write it down. Also check their yelp ratings, that is absolutely something you can help them with, so write it down.

If the business your targeting is a restaurant than use googles results to make them understand that at least 50% of their customers are going to come from the internet. What do people do when they want to find a new place to eat or workout? they look it up online! Than show them print outs of google results for "resteraunts in my town." point out that they are not even on the first page. Therefore all the business is going to all the other restaurants.

Even the way google is now, it shows the most popular restaurants with the best ratings on the first page. Therefore we can help them, diagnose and come up with the right medication.

For this example we will use Franks Restaurant above..
    resultsforgoogle.PNG

His restaurant is not even on the front page, and its because of his horrible ratings. Therefore we would fix his horrible google ratings and tell him that we can put him right there on that front page, so he is at least competing with the others. Than I click on the yelp reviews there in the middle, he is still not even in the results. Therefore we have two things that he is really losing business on. By this point, he will be speechless because the business he loves and puts so much time into is being run down into the ground. Good that's where we want him!

Now another huge thing about franks restaurant is that he doesn't have a website, or a facebook page, or a twitter account.. Most businesses do, however he does not, another really good situation for us!

Show him a page like this, about his competition having a website and being #1 in the results for yelp and google...
    competitionwebsite.PNG

Also, his competition not only has an amazing website, but they have an amazing social network!!

    competitionsocial.jpg

Look at all of those facebook likes and twitter followers, Frank!!! you have no social back up, no website for people to even know you exist, you don't even show up in the search results! Come on frank you can do better than this! I have tried your food and its way better than theirs, we need to fix your online reputation! That's what they are succeeding at and you are failing at, that's what is giving them 4-5 stars and giving you 2!!

He will be jealous and quite FRANKLY he will want to do something about it right away. Immediately after you show him something like this, tell him you can get him twice as many page likes, twice as many followers, and a much better looking website! With 5 star reviews on both google and yelp. Not only 5 star ratings, but a lot of them!!

Now your on the right track, he now feels like he is going to get socially popular and therefore make his business much more popular, which WILL happen. We are not scamming here we are truly helping these business owners!

Alright. So that's all we really need to get frank rolling, now we have converted him. Tell him everything your offering. In franks case...

    • 1 website targeting keywords that are related to his business (restaurants in burbank, where to eat in burbank, etc.)
    • 1 facebook page with 10k page likes
    • 1 twitter account with 5k followers
    • Positive 5 star yelp reviews
    • Positive 5 star google reviews
    • Page 1 ranking in google for chosen keywords

Frank will be excited about all of this, he is about to have his business turned completely around! after all, its hard to keep up with all the technology changes these days, "this kid is going to take care of me!"

And yes, that is exactly what we are going to do! We are going to completely take care Mr. Frank!! No dirty tricks, we are going to make his restaurant popular!

Alright frank, lets talk price! This is a lot of work, and its going to cost a lot of money in advertising online to get you all of those followers and page likes ;) "Ill tell you what frank, since I like you, I will do all of the labor for $100. The rest is just going to be expenses on website, advertising etc" Now frank likes you, thinks your a good fellow!

Come up with some price that the website will cost. (we all know we can get cheap hosting and domain, as well as some easy restaurant design that might cost maybe $50 all together) tell him it will be about $200-$300 one time website fee. There is some more profit right there!

Now, advertising, its a monthly gig for advertising. I like to butter up my clients at this point, I tell them they can name their own price for the advertising. Ask him how much he wants to pay on advertising. He will say, "well how does $300 per month sound?" He might go lower, might say higher, tell him the more he spends the better the results. However you will work with whatever his budget is. (Now your more like a consultant than a business, he will feel more comfortable)

$300 per month sounds good, here is the messed up part. Go buy 5,000 followers on fiver for $5 and 10k page likes for $5. Now your banking another $290 per month, for "social media popularity" Try to get the followers and likes in a leaking format, so he gains little by little.

For the yelp and google reviews, trade with people on forums! There are always other people looking for reviews like that. You can find fiverr gigs that offer yelp and google reviews as well. You can charge poor old frank $100 a month simply to keep the 5 star ratings.

Supply frank some SEO for his new website, get him ranking on page one (its very easy with businesses, especially after you have built up his social popularity) push out a few articles into some article websites. Here are a few I like...

    • hubpages
    • squidoo
    • ezinearticles
    • articlebase

Blast the articles with some fiverr scrapebox gigs afterwards. Were running a business here, its not all about money. You have to do the work. Buy him some $5 social bookmarking back links on fiverr. Fiverr is your best friend in this business! Believe me, just these simple things along with the social media will rank him first page. Of course it will take a while, tell him that its a process and may take a few months before he is on page one of google. However he will see improvements in all other categories!

Alright frank, $500 start up fee and $300 per month after that to keep up on ratings and social advertising?

Hell yea, that's a good deal. What makes it even better is that Frank's business will really get better! He will bring in more customers because what your doing for him. You can easily charge much more money, but for a small business owner like frank Ill hook him up. If your dealing with bigger businesses, than crank that price wayyy up!

Your now making $300 per month for... $20 in fiverr gigs..

With this method, you are going to their business personally. Becoming friends with the business owner and offering help as a friend. If you want to start online than...

Fantastic post. Nice write up. But curious about one thing, you mentioned about building legit business and you're hiring someone to write the reviews (or trade) - shouldn't you create a system that encourage real clients/customers to leave a review instead?

thats definitely apart of it. and something i left out, I always attend the business and work with the owner to create deals in which if people leave their truthful reviews they will get a 10% discount on their next visit. This is what I would do in franks case, with a gym or anything else I would offer free protein shakes etc. Get some discount cards printed out at your local staples or something (you can create it at their website) and have them sitting on the tables for people to take, or have franks employees encourage them at the door.

I do this with my clients every time, you always want to encourage it. Encouraging reviews is powerful but you need to remember, a satisfied customer doesnt leave reviews. but an angry customer has something to say. So sometimes you might screw yourself, you always need the back up of fake reviews to keep the ratings high.

    Very nice write up.

My only question is in regards to the yelp and google reviews. What do you do about making your accounts look legitimate? Most people who use yelp are also savvy enough to notice accounts with only one review and very generic positive text. Do you have a bunch of established yelp accounts that you cycle through or do you have a source for aged accounts?

    Again, great job overall.

EDIT: Just realized I missed this one line: "For the yelp and google reviews, trade with people on forums! There are always other people looking for reviews like that." Awesome, now to check if there are any exchange threads on BHW

Can't wait for part two. There's a business not far from mine with a huge market and great opportunity to make money but they're not using it to their advantage. I'll see what I can do for them, and myself.

Good question, I do a lot of trades with people on forums (just post "yelp and google review trades). I have built a list of people that will post from their yelp or google account for $1 per post. (which is fine with me considering we dont need many)

There are fiverr gigs that I have tried that have worked okay. But I Mainly stick to my list, once you get to that point in the method, just post here on BHW in the freelance section "will pay a quick $1 for every yelp/google review" People react! the little 13 year olds just starting internet marketing with no money will go crazy on a dollar.

than you just give them what to say. There are a bunch of ways to get the googl/yelp reviews. Just be creative!

Thank you! I realized I missed over the first part you mentioned in the original post. Maybe I'll start a BHW Yelp exchange thread :).
