Can I get penalized for listing keyword in meta tag that are not in the content/page?

IBP says that I can be penalized can I?

    Yes and no.

I know that sucks as an answer, but it's true :)

Here is a great blog post from Matt Cutts talking exactly about that.

The Google bot is actually pretty smart now.

What I would take a look at is some of your organic ranking competitors.

See what is inside their meta tags and if they are even using them.

This should show you how far you can "push" against the spam detection in the rankings.

    ------

    Hope that helps!

    Good luck :)

    I would have to agree.

If you are needing to add other key words just add a new page with those key words put some content up and market that page along with all the other pages.

I would think you would want to avoid using keywords that don't match the content on the page anyways. Let's assume you get ranked for those keywords. Visitors to the site more than likely are not going to find what whatever that keyword suggests, so they won't convert anyway. A bit obtuse, but hopefully you get the idea.

Google doesn't actually the meta keyword tag. So it won't help when ranking with them. Other search engines do, so it is worth filling in. So no, you will not be penalized by Google.
