Does anyone know if it would be a bad thing to put my keyword in the description of most of the pages on my website.

The website is a for a business I run and the keyword is very competitive so I was wondering if that could help?

yes off course, if you are running a wordpress site I recommend Wordpress SEO by yoast, if not then yes you could put your keyword in the tittle as well as the description.

    Goodluck :)

Keywords in meta tags are not relevant like they used to be, due to over-spamming.
Last 3 years, I think, they are used only for better categorization of pages, not like SEO factor (at least not like important seo factor).

Would using the keyword as the category aswell as in the meta title+desc + content be overdoing it?

and would renaming the images to the keyword be okay?

EDIT: I was meant to edit the above post and now its double posted -_-

I think this guy is talking about the Keyword Meta Tag, not the description Tag.

The description tag is very important for onpage SEO, so yes, but make it look natural.

Exactly. description and title make with your keywords. If you are on wordpress any seo plugin will tell you how much letters is visible in search engines and how much is ok to have in title, description, some of them will "rate" your seo score and mark in red parts where main keyword is missing (it is good to have it in article title, in article body few times etc) also do a few relevant tags.

Yes, renaming images is ok and desired, as well as alt tags to be with keyword.

Its not a bad thing to add your keyword in the descriptions, just don't over do it by having the keyword in footer, tags, interlinking posts, etc.

If you look at SEO as a big picture I think keywords in meta description helps, Its going to increase your CTR. Which I think would be very important with rankings.

donot put the same keyword in description of all pages, google cannot figure out which page to rank in this way.

    Definitely do it.

It's not like Google doesn't like your site because you put your keywords in the meta description, titles and so on.

It's when you "over-do" it in a spammy way that it considers it excessive on-page optimization.
