I've been in this industry for quite a few years. I deal mainly with local clients, but I do deal with some others ones occasionally. Now, before you buy SEO and complain it doesn't work, read this thread.

Your site isn't going to rank if it doesn't have content

Common sense? Think again. The amount of times I've had a client buy SEO for a site that had just Wordpress installed, a title, a tagline and no content and complain why they weren't ranking is surprising. You need content to rank. Yes, it isn't whitehat SEO, but you need to give Google some base knowledge on what your site is about.

    SEO services don't work miracles

Yes, we build links. Maybe some of us add some other stuff to, but at the end of the day, it's not enough. You can't just buy an SEO service and magically rank #1 in 10 minutes, it doesn't work like that. You need to continue managing your website, adding content, adding other links, dripping some social signals and all that other good stuff. Us SEO's don't have a button that we can just click and 10 minutes later, your site is #1.

    SEO takes time

If you ever buy SEO, please don't ask 1 day, or even a week after why your site isn't ranking. Google needs to pickup the links. Google has a lot of processing power, correct. But the fact that the sites that contain your links aren't the only ones in existence means that Google doesn't get to them instantly, it takes time. So please be patient, don't just subscribe to a monthly service, get some rankings, unsubscribe and then complain on the thread why your rankings dropped. This is one of the most annoying things I've had to deal with.

    Don't ask for a refund

Yeah, you've heard of all of the fancy threads that offer ranking guarantees and have fancy thread designs. Basically, even if one of your keywords rises one position, let's say from #106 to #105, you're not going to get a refund. A lot of the services that do this are trying to make you feel secure, and it's quite deceptive. People ask for refunds, and the sellers blame the buyer because of some "on page SEO issues" or "a new Google update". Don't buy those services, because at the end of the day, the money you're paying them is going towards a new thread they're going to launch later and the fancy thread design so that they can lure in more buyers like you. Most other services build links, great. But that's all we do. Again, we aren't magicians, we build links, do whatever else we promise - but at the end of the day, that's that. There are no guarantees in SEO.

Thanks for this! I totally agree, especially on the first point that you made, that you cannot rank without content. I have come across a lot of people who are asking about strategies that they can use to rank as an alternative to providing content. I mean, there is just no way for them to do that.

Very good points here. Most people will ignore this, but it should be a sticky. SEO takes time and links are not the only piece of the puzzle. The days of overnight rankings are gone.

Yes mate I agree with you. I've seen nubs here buying a 3$ seo pack and expecting to rank their sites to page 1 and complain sellers and thrash their thread. I mean wtf, seriously ?

Also, I got a message asking what I use for content. I use Aluminium's (not Aluminum) content writing service. Worth the money. If you guys have any questions, please post here and don't PM me. Let's share the knowledge.

You've gotta love the people that have insane expectations.

"Hi sir, I want first page rankings for payday loans. If I buy your package will I rank on first spot for these keywords in 2 days? If not I will refund you, report you to BBB and call Obama to report you."

Sure guy, your awesome blogspot's with a few social bookmarks. Good luck with that.

I wish more of my customers knew this.

My problem is that when another agency comes in at half the price my clients just see savings, regardless of what I say to them, they seem to think that they will get the same level of work and management.

Today, everything you listed is twice as important. Some clients don't even wait long enough for their links to get indexed before claiming that they don't work. The name of the game is patience and 'no guarantees'. No one can say for sure if a particular site will hit the top for any keyword.

Expectation setting is key for clients. I learned this the hard way, but you should always communicate to your clients the ground realities of SEO and have them make an informed decision.
