My wife is looking at a "new" car. Keep in mind we NEVER buy new so this is a "new" used car. We typically go one or 2 model years old and maybe 15 - 20 k miles on it. With that in mind I'm just wondering what y'all think of these two cars. I realize there there are more than one BMW 5 Series. I'm not sure which model compares to the Benz.

A bit of a tough choice.

Both look alright (if your getting the previous generation 5 series, aka ugly mofo then def go for the merc).

All depends on what model your getting. Merc is gonna be more fuel thirsty as most the beamers now come with smaller turbo motors.

Inside wise, iDrive is still a pile of junk, so I'm guessing Merc's interface wins there. However the Merc has a pretty weird speedo, which you can't see in the pics but when you do in person, it's rather strange.

Anyway comes down to personal preference. The bmw will probably handle slightly better but your going to get more grunt from the Merc.

    Nice problem to have....:)

Youre quite right btw in wanting to avoid the forecourt tax by going nearly new. The first 15k is a roadtest....

If the lady will drive most, then go for the stylish merc. If you, the gent, then ....go for the merc!

    (Subject to local availability, etc...)

I've been off Beemers ever since Clarkson (twat) called them Nazi staff cars years ago. Irrational i know - but its stuck

(And I suffer for my Merc preference with really clutzy M series, But the saloons are superior)

The mercedes will hold its value better (buying and selling used you'll find the same price on a comparable one, same price new, and as much as 4-5 model years until the used price evens out) and it also seems like more people drive bmws these days. I looked a lot at both when I wanted to buy a luxury sedan (and also lexus and infinity) but in the end I bought an audi and didn't regret it, great car.

this one is a little expensive...

But, depends on Year and Model and Miles on the car you're looking for
    2008/10 go for BMW
2010/13 go for MB (very expensive) but if you look for same car from 2008/10, then better to go for BMW...

Just my personal opinion, i'm looking for the something the same, on MB i want to choose from 219/220 and 221 models, i have a few Audi A6/A8 to choose from, but i don't want to hear anymore about Audi, and especially to deal with Fucking Dealers from NJ,PA and DE

    Good Luck

Why not consider an Audi A6? I had never had an Audi before I bought an S8 for my wife last year (insanely irrational, I know) and I was really impressed by the quality. I think Audi A6 is more or less in the same category as the 5 series.

I would go for Mercedes. I love them, they look classy and always great. I love old Mercedes, and by old I mean the ones from 80s for example. 2001s Mercedes still look shiny. BMWs usually look too big for me. I think it is more a personal decision, but once you see the Mercedes, you will fall in love.

Missed you Audi rant before I posted. Wasn't trying to pick a fight :) The S8 I bought for my wife is great though. Though she does tend to hit stuff when parking or driving on narrow roads, I just love it and sometimes sneak out at night to drive it around.

Well in my opinion, 3 series are a lot better, but if your deciding between one of the 5 series and a e350, I would go for the 5 series just for the handling. But, if you wife isn't into the cruising/higher speed driving then it doesn't really matter. There both nice cars and if she doesn't entirely care about performance(their both very close anyways) that I guess it is up to whatever she likes the looks of better.

When Audi shipped those cars from Germany, those cars was GREAT. But after Audi moved to Mexico, you need to be crazy, to read all the forums about audi problems, and to buy this car...
I've got A4, was GREAT car, later i've got A8 from mexico, this was a deal of my life, i thought i'll die because of weekly problems and money paid to dealers...
No way guys, Stay away from AUDI, ...

+1, Audi's will break down constantly as soon as they get a few years old.

My e30 3 series thats 23 years old is now worth more then a A6 from 10-13 years ago lol.

Not all Audi's. At least the ones in Europe are much more reliable.

Yeap, that's what i'm trying to tell you guys, about.
My A4 was from 1999, my A8 was new, and i never spend anything on A4, except brakes, oil, filters But on fucking A8 from the first week i started to get Engine Light On, later when i was in Downtown in Chicago, my car died, they took it back and in 2 weeks called me with the great news, they changed main computer, cause of factory error... but the surprise didn't end here, on a new car after less than 1 year i changed starter and coils !!! i used to drive my A4 for a few years, but never changed anything.
And the customer service from Audi Dealers, are the WORST in USA !!! They Canceled my Full Coverage (FACTORY), cause in Chicago i called 1800 ***** Audi Call Center, and asked for Help, they sent me guys from VW Dealer and my car was tolled to VW Dealer, cause it was the nearest in the area... after i got my car back, i called them again with Engine Light, and they told me, I have no more Audi Coverage cause my car was in other Dealer fucking hands !!! can you believe it ??? i told them that they sent VW guys to take me from the road, but without any success.... They didn't refuse to repair my car, they was very nice with me, telling me that i have to pay for everything if i want to get serviced at any Audi Dealer, cause my car was repaired outside of Audi locations....
I was about to divorce, my wife was ready to kill me, cause of this car...

So, good luck guys, but think twice before you put some good cash on dealer pocket...
