Press releases are really not meant for seo, rather than getting your brand out there, and hope for bigger news site to feature your releases hence getting targetted traffic to your site.

Most PR now features on google news

Sad to say, but I can second Matt.
I promoted a complete new product line. There was almost no competition. Natural rank for the brand name was initially #7.
I shot about 20 HQ PRs on this product category, anchored with the exact brand name (+ other kind of links with plain url, lsi variations) - No move until today, several months later.

Hahaha! This is the most blatant lie I've ever heard come out of Matt Cutts. I've been using Press Releases for SEO with all of my clients, and it works every time. I think I'll trust my own experience and judgment more than a guy that's trying to put me out of business.

I honestly think that blackhat SEO's can teach the Google "spam team" about their own algorithms.

Press releases are part of a well rounded SEO strategy and will continue to be. There wasn't enough substance to his comment for anyone to know what he was thinking when he said it.

The real question is why was he on that board on Christmas Day? No vacation time? Take a day off Matt.

It is clear that a big part of Google's war on SEO involves a propaganda effort. They often tell blatant lies about what does and doesn't work.

How much effort is involved in improving the algorithms to stop a technique working versus simply putting out a release saying you have stopped that technique working? It is much cheaper and simpler to put out some propaganda, which will be parroted by SEOMoz, and hope enough people believe it.

The biggest secret to succeed in SEO is to do opposite of what Matt Cutts says.

Press release works and will always works. But don't just depend on press releases to boost your site. Diversify and use them as part of your SEO strategy.

Alot of the PRs I've seen are nofollow so they probably don't help. I'm guessing that's what he's referring to.

Yeh probably because that's how long they took to get indexed. Press releases are good because you can build a load of good quality, natural tier 1s very quickly and easily. You still need to get them indexed and and still need to build link pyramids below them to get them to pass lots of link juice. No link will carry any weight unless it is indexed...

That's true, they wrote something about how negative SEO doesn't work, then a ton of sites got hit with hit. Then they rolled out some stupid link disavow tool, and had him do a video about neg seo. Its pretty obvious a lot of what they do is hyperbole, conjecture and confusion, most of which comes from Matt Cutts. It seems strange they run things like this...

The man is just a nuisance, if all he can think about on Xmas day is how to start a new SEO rumor,
    then I pity his family.
I have no doubt in the back of my mind that Mr C and his spam team have a vast amount of invested in
online marketing sites and they just hate it when they get outranked and spanked by Blackhatters.

Lets be honest if you had the defo insider knowledge of what ways to rank etc, you would be kickin it
as I am sure Mr C is

We can do a test on whether it works for rankings or not. Target something like blue widget on a new domain or post
